Paper topics and instructions

Write a well-argued essay using data (evidence) to support your explanations and
argument. The draft should be a minimum of three (3) written pages, and not a list of
points. Please type in double-space in size 12 font.
Choose any one of the following questions.
1. How and why were the British able to establish political control in South Asia?
2. Did the British ‘westernize’ South Asia? Analyze this question in light of any two (2)
of the policies of the East India Company towards (a) land revenue, (b) law and the
judiciary, (c) the army, (d) the police, (e) the administrative structure, or (f) education.
3. How and why did the British manage to defeat the rebels in 1857? How would you
characterize the events of that year?
4. Why did reform and revival movements appear in South Asia? What were their
programs? What did they achieve? (Examine trends amongst Hindus OR Muslims).
5. Did the British in any way make it possible for ‘Indians’ to combine to form a
‘national movement’?
Draft (at least 3 pages) due in D2L on April 30.
This draft should contain:
(i) This has to be AT LEAST three full pages written out in full sentences. However,
I recommend that you write out a full draft. The more you write, the more I can advise,
and the better your final paper will be.
(ii) You HAVE TO use the textbook for the draft and the final paper. You may use
academic books or articles in addition to these – please consult with me before you use
online resources.
(iii) You will get the full 5% if you submit the draft on time; and zero if it isn’t on time.
(iv) Please write out the question you are answering in full as the title of your paper.
Do not a
eviate it or make up your own title. Answer all the parts of the question.
(v) Write your name on all the pages. Number the pages.
(vi) Provide a bibliography, even if you have only used the textbook.

(ii) You must give a full bibliography (list of books, etc., used to write the paper).
(iii) Write your name on all the pages.
(iv) Please write out the question you are answering in full as the title of your paper. Do
not a
eviate it or make up your own title. Answer all the parts of the question.
Please note:
1. Late submission of the draft and/or the final version will receive grade cuts.
2. You are welcome to consult me before the draft/paper is due.
3. Submit your assignment earlier if you cannot do it on the due date.
4. Use the textbooks for your paper.
5. Do NOT use Wikipedia or similar sources for either the draft or the final paper.
