INTRODUCTION: Coefficient of permeability is an important property of soil and it can be determined by constant head permeability test and falling head permeability test. In constant head approach, water flows under a given constant head or hydraulic gradient through a soil sample of known length and cross sectional area in a given time. While in falling head approach, the head is not constant.
OBJECTIVE: To be familiar with two procedures of evaluating coefficient of permeability in laboratory.
CONSTANT HEAD PERMEABILITY TEST:
Procedure: Procedure was discussed in two steps, as follows-
Preparation of the specimen: At first weight of plastic specimen tube, porous stones, spring, and two ru
er stoppers (W1) were recorded. After slipping the bottom porous stone into the specimen tube, the bottom ru
er stopper was fixed to the specimen tube. Then oven dry sand was collected in a container. Using a spoon the sand was poured into the specimen tube in small layers and then compacted. When the length of the specimen was about two-thirds the length of the tube, top porous stone was slipped into the tube to rest firmly on the specimen....
