Tourism industry has undergone through tremendous changes which have effectively contributed
in the success and growth of industry. In continuation to the legacy of growth in industry
specifications it has secured the position of largest global industry. Most of the market centric
efforts remain focused to that of exploration of tourism opportunities around pristine natural
environments, of which the most prefe
ed destinations are coastal and marine protected areas. In
consideration to the rising interest of local and international tourist towards getting experience of
natural environment or coastal marine life experience, Island tourism have made its significant
place in the global tourism market.
Vacation visits to such places not only facilitates alluring experiences to the individual
tourists or families but also contributes in growth of the respective economies. For certain Island
economies like Hawaii, Okinawa, Saipan and Guam etc., Island tourism acts as the major
contributor in external receipt and economic growth. (Kakazu, 2006) Considering such influence
of tourism industry over economic productivity and growth prospects, it seems crucial to explore
and utilize the opportunities to achieve sustainability in tourism business. Later parts of the paper
depict the
ief details about the concept of sustainable tourism, relative strategies and
competitive advantages of such approach.
Concept of Sustainability in consideration to Okinawa
Island Tourism has helped in expanding the growth of the Island economies and in most
of the cases proved itself as substitute of the manufacturing industry through active contribution
in almost 20-70% of the external income of Island economies. Although Island tourism makes
significant contribution in economic growth of Island, but such growth is intensively dependent
on the extremely limited and fragile natural resources and cultural attributes. Islands like Hawaii,

ecological concerns like shortage of water resources, food insecurity, environmental degradation
