Exam 4 – May 2-4, 2022
Problem No XXXXXXXXXXpoints)
Given: The shed in the Figure has double 2X6 knee
aces on each column to resist the lateral
force. Lumber is Southern Pine. The
aces are to be connected to the columns with 16d
common nails, lateral seismic force to roof diaphragm
WEL = 98 plf
Height h1 = 9 ft; h2= 2ft.
Determine the following:
1. Use ASD analysis and find the required number of Nails for the
ace connection for
oth wet and dry conditions. (use the six modes and Z-equations for this analysis)
2. Use LRFD Analysis and find the required number of Nails for the
ace connection for
oth wet and dry conditions.
3. Repeat part 1) and 2) to determine how the number of nails change if ring shank nails
are used with D=0.148 in. and L = 3.5 in.

Problem No2: (50 points)
Roof beams are connected to foundation top plates with 8d box toenails. Lumber is DF-L. Roof
eams are spaced 16 in o.c. Wind pressure =40 psf; Wall height is 12ft.
Determine the required number of toenails per roof beam:
1. Using ASD and LRDF procedure and for both dry and wet conditions.
