Wastewater Treatment Plant Assignment
      Handed out:
      Due Date:

The original assignment would have been to complete a conceptual design of a waste water (sewage)
treatment plant as a group:
‐ Preliminary Treatment
‐ Primary Treatment
‐ Secondary Treatment
‐ Tertiary Treatment
‐ Sludge Treatment
Given the changes to things over the last couple of weeks, this will be modified.  Instead of doing a
group WWTP design, you are each going to do research into an existing WWTP, and outline the details
of the individual treatment processes of that plant.  The assignment will be written in the same fashion
as a Technical Report, with title page, table of contents, introduction, discussion, conclusions,
eferences, etc.
Tasks:
‐ The assignment shall be submitted as a technical
ief (small tech report).
‐ Choose a WWTP in Ontario, and research the details of that plant.
‐ The
ief shall describe and be laid out in the order of the WWTP design.
‐ The
ief will contain details about each individual process, including the flow rates, dimensions,
treatment efficiency (where available), and your own interpretation on whether the process is
meeting the requirements of wastewater treatment.  If not, then what could be modified to
ing the treatment up to standards.
‐ A diagram/schematic of the WWTP facilities.  Ensure the schematic is labeled and printed to a
legible size (11x17 paper is prefe
ed).  This could include scans/clips of the available reports
about the plant, or visuals from other sources (properly cited).

The final assignment (#3) will be marked on professional presentation of the overall work.
Assignment is worth 35% of final grade.

Tasks:
- The assignment shall be submitted as a technical
ief (small tech report).
- Revise and include the WTP design and description from assignment #2.
- The
ief shall describe and be laid out in the order of the WTP design and then WWTP design.
- The
ief will contain all required calculations. All calculations shall be printed in a digital form
(no rough notes in pen/pencil)
- WWTP Location Plan.
- Two (2) diagram/schematic in AutoCAD format; the WTP & WWTP facilities. Ensure the
schematic is labeled and printed to a legible size (11x17 paper is prefe
ed).
The final assignment (#3) will be marked on professional presentation of the overall work.
Assignment is worth 35% of final grade.

The City of Belleville has reviewed and approved your RFP for completing a new WWTP design. The City
has indicated that the existing treatment plant is out of date and its life cycle is over, and is not worth
spending money on
inging it up to standard. Therefore, the new treatment plant must be for the
entire City’s demand (existing and future).
The existing population is 2BE,0D0 and the future growth is expected to grow at a rate of 0.D% for the
next 25 years.
a) Overall plant surface area = 2a00 m² - problem with it being too small? scratch entirely?
) Minimum spacing between tanks for access = 3.b m
c) Maximum daily flow to be calculated using Harmon Formula
d) Minimum daily flow is 60% of the average daily flow
e) Influent BOD = 24c mg/l and SS = 26d mg/l
f) Primary clarifier detention time = 1 hr
g) Secondary clarifier tank detention time = 2 hr
h) 15e0 m3/d activated sludge system
i) F/M ratio = 0.3
j) MLVSS concentration = 21a0 mg/l
k) Grit chamber detention time = 20 min
l) Number of grit chambers 2-4
m) Number of aeration tanks 2-4
n) Number of primary clarifiers 2-3
o) Secondary clarifier, same # of tanks as the primary
p) BOD removal for primary clarifiers = 35% with all basins in operation, and 30% with one basin
out of service
q) Maximum effluent BOD if discharging to the lake = 15 mg/l, if discharging to the river = 12 mg/l

Introduction
The growing population places a special emphasis on the growing water demand in the city and especially the demand of the potable water supplies, which are adversely affected by various factors like pollutants which are being originated from the industrial, domestic or agricultural waste and are then disposed into various water bodies resulting in contamination of the water sources. In addition to these local pollutants certain harmful and hazardous contaminants of anthropogenic wastes originating from various pharmaceutical industries are damaging and have a great adverse impact of the water sources as it reduces the transparency of the water, which ultimately will result in a reduction in penetration of light and will hamper the process of photosynthesis. In addition to this, it also reduces the amount of dissolved oxygen in the water which is a great threat to the aquatic life and the whole ecosystem too. As the sources and water are limited there is a need to install such plants that will reuse or recycle the wastewater and will solve the issue of scarcity of water with the growing population and hence the wastewater treatment plant was introduced.
