Introduction

Hu
icanes causes huge economic and non economic losses to a nation, though there are several
precautionary actions being taken by government to manage this type of disaster but it is difficult
to make it unavoidable totally. Therefore, Florida building codes are being formed to increase the
safety for all. Major objective of writing this paper is to evaluate the impact of building codes in
south Florida. This paper will include information on history of hu
icanes in the region, need for
establishing building codes and then analyzing their impact. This paper will analyze building
codes, its impact and benefit to various stakeholders involved.

icanes in south Florida

Hu
icane is a tropic cyclone that occurs because of increment in the pressure at the centre
su
ounded by the thunderstorm. Geographical location of Florida makes it prone to hu
icanes,
the area is su
ounded by tropic and westerly winds also come from African coast. Beside this,
Florida has long history of disastrous hu
icanes that has changed the lives of people living there.
Tracing back to 1919, when 800 people in south Florida were killed in the storm (Sutter, 2008).
After this several hu
icanes occu
ed in the region till date, out of which ten storms are the most
disastrous one killing huge number of people. Several hu
icanes in South Florida include

icane Donna in 1964 that caused loss over $2.4 billion in the region and many more.
Need for building codes

In the year 1992, hu
icane Andrew hit the region, this storm caused huge structural losses
including 13 platform loss and 104 structural damages; total damage made by this hu
icane storm
was $32 billion (Wilson & Travers, 1997). With this disaster, need for improving construction in
storm porn area in Florida was felt by the government and building codes were made. To fight with
this inevitable scenario all the stakeholders needs to operate jointly.
