People have many different reasons for returning to college. However, these reasons 
tend to fall into one of three broad areas; self-improvement, career possibilities, and 
professional requirements. Since these reasons are qualitative, dealing with personal and 
difficult to quantify reasons, the best research methods to use are interviews and surveys. 
Ideally, however, they would be supported by quantitative data on the actual effect of 
returning to college –for example, on the average income before and after the return to 
college.
