Syphilis, smallpox, measles, mumps, and bubonic plague were among the diseases spread by Europeans, and Native Americans had little immunity to them because they had never been exposed to them. As a result, mortality was higher than if the diseases were native to the Americas. Traditional American Indian views on health and other aspects of life were affected by Indian religion. Health encompasses harmony with oneself, including body, mind, and spirit, harmony with others, and harmony with one's surroundings or environment.
