What are the primary considerations before deciding to implement an aerobic treatment
process?
Microorganisms can be termed as; effective tools for waste treatment either in situ or ex
situ. Basically to deal with waste, we might adopt two approaches: Anaerobic and Aerobic. In
anaerobic approach, such microbes are used which can survive even in the absence of oxygen
whereas; in case of aerobic approach, the microbes used for the purpose either cannot tolerate the
oxygen deficiency or may not perform well in absence of oxygen.
The selection of appropriate technique is done on the basis of type of waste as well as
efficiency of the waste treatment plant. For instance; aerobic waste treatment system is applied
only when the organic matter present in waste can support biological activity of aerobic
microbes.
Indeed, aerobic microbes need proper nutrients (for instance; N2 and P) as well as
dissolved oxygen for their growth and metabolism and implementation of aerobic treatment
system also demands controlled temperature (> 15
0
), pH (6-8) and aeration conditions. If such
a
angements are not possible then it’s better to opt for anaerobic treatment approach (if feasible)
as; in case of poor growth conditions, aerobic microbes cannot prove to be valuable in context of
waste treatment.
What kind of biotechnology may be considered to treat approximately 3000 cubic yards of
VOC contaminated soil on a two-acre site fairly quickly and why?
Volatile Organic Compounds or VOCs are released as gases from a range of solids or
liquids (for instance; paints, cleaning supplies, pesticides, building matters and furnishings,
copiers and...
