How transportation cost effect the government in the Middle-East
ABSTRACT
The study tries to comprehend the impact of transportation cost on the price of crude oil due to
the high degree of dependence of Middle-East economy on the returns from oil reserves. Further,
the influence of oil price shock is analyzed through various supply side and demand side factors
on the export of oil and hence the effect on the governments treasure, balance of payment
account, and the government bo
owings. Also, the report attempts to formulate some strategies
that the government can exercise to keep a control over the transportation cost and maintain its
dominance over the rest of the world.
INTRODUCTION
The Middle-East is known for its oil reserves as a large proportion of world oil reserves are
concentrated here and out of which almost sixty percent of these are under the control of
Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC). It is important to note that it
supplies thirty percent of world’s oil solely. Moreover, oil is one of the most strategically
important items of all the sectors of any economy, so Middle-East enjoys some degree of
dominance over the world economies. Apart from this, it is important to note that oil trade
constitutes a significant share of the Middle-East economy’s economic activity and hence huge
exports of oil have a great impact on the government accounts and economy’s balance of
payment account. Over this background, it will be easier to understand the impact of
transportation cost on the Middle-East government. Oil once extracted has to be transported to
efineries and then from there to different locations where it is exported. This involves huge
transportation costs which form an important share in the expenditure of oil producing unit. Any
increase in the transportation cost will have a direct impact on the price of oil which will create
problems for the Middle-East government by affecting government...
