Case Study Chapter 13 Respiratory
Mr Don had been a pharmacist in NY City. He retired to Florida and spent most of his days
swimming in the Gulf. He was healthy and strong. Gradually, however, his years of smoking
egan to compromise his lung capacity. Soon he could not swim at all. Eventually, even trips to
the beach were not possible. The diagnosis was pulmonary emphysema and COPD. Oxygen
was needed, and his activities were diminished to cooking dinner for his wife and himself. M
Don was emba
assed about the oxygen tank and would no longer go out in public. He died
when he was 85.

Discuss the impact of BOTH diseases on Mr Don’s life.

Case Study Ch 14 Digestive
George, a 52-year-old man, previously diagnosed with IBS, reports that he is having 3 to 5
owel movements per day. The movements are runny and loose and filled with red blood.
George has not experienced any constipation. His family practitioner refers him to a
gastroenterologist.
1. Describe IBS, including basic Patho and common signs and symptoms.
2. Are his reported symptoms compatible with IBS?
3. What is his most significant symptom? Is any other disease possible suspected?
4. What tests will the doctor most likely order?
