Introduction:
Permeability is an important geotechnical parameter which is a measure of the ease in which water can flow through a soil volume. Coefficient of permeability is rate of flow under laminar flow conditions through a unit cross sectional area of porous medium under unit hydraulic gradient. The rate of flow of water through a soil sample of gross cross section area A, can be written as q=k.i.A, where q is flow in unit time, k is coefficient of permeability and i is the hydraulic gradient. In constant head permeability test, water flows under a constant head or hydraulic gradient through a soil sample and in falling head test water flows under varying head. Constant head test is generally performed to evaluate permeability of granular soils like sands or gravels containing little or no silts. Falling head test is usually ca
ied out to evaluate permeability of fine grained soils with intermediate and low permeability such as silts and clays.
Objective:
The purpose of performing constant and falling head permeability test were to be familiar with these two measures of determining coefficient of permeability in laboratory.
Procedure:
Specimen was at first prepared before ca
ying out these two tests.
At first mass of plastic specimen tube, porous stones, spring, and two ru
er stoppers (M1) were taken. Then the bottom porous stone was slipped into the specimen tube and the bottom ru
er stopper was fixed to the specimen tube. Oven dry sand was collected in a container. Using a spoon the sand was poured into the specimen tube in small layers and then...
