Due Date: March 12

Purpose:

Draft Argument

Topic: Social Media and privacy

Short writing exercises can be thought of as assignments to help you with your final project. Please consider picking articles/sources that relate to your final project. It may require editing, but you may use your writing in your final project.

Directions:

According to Graff and Birkenstein (2014), a strong contribution to the academic conversation on any topic presents the perspectives of others who have written on the subject while also adding a unique perspective to the conversation. Graff and Birkenstein identify a variety of “moves” a writer can use to do this effectively. Focus on chapters 4 and 5 as you engage in this assignment.

Draft the overall argument for your course paper. This draft will be a cross between an outline and first draft. You will flesh it out and polish it later. If you prefer, you can make this a full first draft instead. Your draft should include the following aspects:

  • an introduction that briefly and concisely identifies key current perspectives on the topic you have chosen along with your unique perspective (a.k.a. thesis) and the overall reasoning behind your perspective (supportable by sources you will be using in the paper; refer to your annotated bibliography) so that your reader will know what this paper is about and where you stand on the topic
  • a body plan that lays out the overall flow of the paper, including selected summaries, relevant quotes, and your specific responses to later draft into a cohesive body that includes each of the following:

(Part 1) fair presentation of current perspectives, how they fit together into a whole, where there are gaps or disagreements, etc...

(Part 2) clear presentation of your argument and how it adds to the conversation, and

(Part 3) presentation of several sources supporting your argument

• a conclusion that brings it all together and reminds the reader of your argument and why it matters or should matter to them

Formatting:

The main draft (introduction, body plan, and conclusion) should be at least 5-6 pages in length, doubled spaced, 12 point Times New Roman in Microsoft Word (doc or docx). Please provide the citation for each quote in APA style (both in text and as a reference at the end; see below for more information on APA citation guidelines).

Introduction
Concerns regarding the degradation of user privacy and security on social media have ensnared the citizens as well as cybersecurity professionals. Innumerable cases of data
eaches over the years have resulted in the growing concern regarding the relationship between social media and its privacy. Incidents of data mining, phishing attempts, sharing of malware, spyware and ransomware and botnet attacks have alarmed the social media users around the globe. According to the observations of Bazarova and Masur (2020), once an individual is on the internet, he/she is always under some kind of surveillance and that his/her privacy is no longer private in nature.
People like to share a slice of their lives with the huge global community that is available only through social media. When sharing their perspectives or their lifestyles, the users tend to share certain important and confidential information on the internet via social media. Although certain people support the idea that social media does maintain the privacy of its users, the majority disagrees with the notion. Concerns regarding the privacy and individual security on social media revolves around re-purposing, deciding what data to show to the outsiders relating to oneself when using social networking sites and so on. Nowadays, the social media users have the freedom to choose from a series of customisations such as who can view the posts, who can send friend requests, who can contact under respective setting. However, as social media does not have any kind of geographical limitations, personal information has the risk of being leaked if it is shared on the internet.

ing to light the fact that social media users need to be educated about the notions of individual privacy in order to safeguard their confidential...
