Question 1 The rise of—and the history of—political parties in the United States
A political party is basically defined as a group of citizens who agree on major issues that face nation. United States has a two-party system as both parties work to win voters and even control their local, state and national offices. Political party is a group of voters who are organised to support certain public policies. Political party offers candidates for public office. The leaders of American Revolution disliked the idea of parties and political battles between parties. There were other Democratic Republicans who involved themselves in just governmental activities as well as supported the Federalists too. There was strong believe that people generally kept faith and trust in national or federal government. Therefore, even the federal government had to be left alone and their powers were to be reinstated in the hands of the state and local governments. Federalists also had a viewpoint that capital and industry were the main basis of a healthy republic and with the federal government in place, there would be enough space to even protect the country’s infant industries(Flanders).
American political life was also influenced by different sections of the country as there was constant qua
els between people that also led to civil war. It so happened that with the defeat of the Southern Confederacy, there was weakening of the Democrats as the voter’s minds were associated with the Southern cause. Republicans too were a major party during this phase. Today, both the parties agree on social security, unemployment insurance, basic foreign policy and civil rights as they have successfully risen to become part of the world’s most powerful economy. Political parties play a very significant role in shaping up and enhancing the growth of any economy. The rise of the political party can be seen as part of the modern era where there is progressivism for reform in all areas of the society(Flanders).
The major political parties are well organised in USA. These parties are also run by county and state committees that can be chosen at state conventions or even appointed by party officers. The US parties have their own way of working in the country such that their committee members are chosen at conventions or appointed by party officers. Moreover, every four years parties also hold national conventions which has nomenclature of presidential and vice-presidential range. Each political party gets a platform here that can win a stand in the political turmoil and moreover, if the party wins the platform then this is what they stand for. The platform is also supposed to guide the actions of the elected officials even as the party wins the debate over. With advertising and opinion in favour the media coverage for political parties in USA is in full flow. State and federal laws of the country are such that it can control the ways in which political parties can raise and handle the money. Special interest groups are also such that they can raise money and influence growth of the candidates belonging to such political parties (American Political Parties 1-17).
