Introduction to driverless cars:
A driverless car or an autonomous car, sometimes also called as robotic car is a car capable of
maneuvering on its own without any human intervention. It uses advanced technologies like
GPS, Radar, Lidar and lasers to sense its su
oundings and run on the road. Many companies
and institutions like Google, Toyota, Audi, Lexus, Oxford University and Stanford University
have already developed working prototypes of autonomous vehicles. Google has come a long
way in this field with successful testing of a number of vehicles.
Historical background:
The history of autonomous cars goes back to the Futuruma Exhibition hosted by General Motors
which envisioned electronic circuits embedded in the highways to control electronic cars. The
1980
s
saw a significant rise in the technologies for autonomous driving. Ernst Dickmanns and his
group built automated cars which averaged to 96kmph on streets with minimal traffic. The
technologies used were saccadic vision, kalman filters and parallel computing. This also lead to a
funding of 800 million Euros from the European Commission towards research on automated
vehicles. A major
eakthrough came in 1991 when US passed the ISTEA Transportation
Authorization Bill which included coming up with an ‘automated vehicle and highway system’
y 1997. In 1994, vehicles ‘VAMP’ and ‘VITA-2’ drove up to 130 kmph on a Paris 3-lane
highway with limited human intervention.
Since 2000, many autonomous and semi-autonomous vehicles are being used in military and
industries like mining. But fully automated passenger transit system is still in its development
stage although significant work has been done in the field.
