Evaluate the implications for operations management in organizations that operate internationally.
For this assignment, you will select and assess the same type of product from two different firms,
such as an SUV vehicle from Toyota, and BMW. (NOTE: You cannot use the automotive industry,
so pick another industry that operates internationally)
In a 6-page paper, defend the organizations’ production processes, customer interaction in those
processes, if applicable, and the technologies used in production. Judge each organization’s
commitment to quality and excellence, as well as the process used for measuring quality. Describe
each of the selected organization’s inventory methodologies and model(s), and any areas for
improvement. Describe each of the selected organization’s movements toward lean processes or
Six Sigma, and how these impact the culture, efficiency, and success of each organization. Finally,
compare and contrast each company’s production processes, customer interactions in those
processes, and technologies used in production.

Introduction
The implications of Operations Management in organizations all over the world have changed drastically over the years due to rapid globalization and increased competition for market share. With new routes of investment emerging such as Foreign Direct Investment, Outsourcing and Franchisee models, companies are in dire need to evolve their operational objectives for imminent success both in the local and global marketplace. Some firms have been successful in incorporating their operational strategy with the overall business strategy by adapting technological innovations and customer oriented processes. In this assignment, the operation management processes of two firms Apple and Samsung will be discussed, analyzing the processes of their smartphones manufacturing.
Implications of Operations Management in Apple and Samsung for their International Functionality
The key feature of the Apple phones is that though they are 100% American products given the fact that they are designed and engineered by highly skilled designers as well as developers in Apple’s headquarters in California. Yet, it has components manufactured in various parts of the world by companies such as Samsung, Foxxcon and LG to name a few. As mentioned by Kraemer, Linden and Dedrick (2011), the chips are manufactured in Texas by multiple suppliers including IBM and Intel with the overall software also indigenously developed in its data center in Carolina and the phone glass developed in Kentucky.
Majority of the rare earth minerals used in Apple phones are mined in Mongolia, thus being a primary reason for assembly in China due to distance proximity, which is soon expected to change with the development of eco-friendly mining techniques in the United States. Apple has long sourced its LCD panels from countries such as Japan, Korea and Taiwan by companies such as LG, Sharp, Japan Display and Samsung due to their expertise in the domain. Samsung, a key competitor is a key supplier of microchips and rechargeable batteries for Apple phones. Europe also gets a small share of the iPhone pie with STMicroelectronics supplying it with the gyroscope technology (Phonearena, 2014).
All the above-mentioned components are shipped from their respective locations for assembly in China, which facilitates cheap and dynamic assembly as per the customer requirements. On the technological aspect, Apple has harnessed automation and labor with majority of the workforce replaced by robots even at the suppliers’ end. Apple has also employed smart machines, which are capable of learning new skills with greater flexibility during its entire production line. The company’s Liam robot is responsible for recycling its old phones, which is a patented technology in the space (Finances Online, 2018).

ocher and Battaglia (2015), Samsung revamped its production line for the next generation Galaxy phones with introduction of 3D thermoforming for the edge technology enabling the company to curve the phones at both ends. The glass manufacturing is a 15-step intricate process eliminating even the slightest e
ors. A Nano thin coating process is employed to give the front and rear of the phone a lustrous and shiny finish. As stated by Hitt, Carnes and Xu (2016), to ensure durability of the phones highest grade Aluminum is used, which also finds applications in aircrafts, automobiles and sports bikes, which is itself a 20-step process involving extrusion, molding for integration of the components and diamond cutting of the edges.
