THE DISCUSSION STARTER QUESTION

There has been a position put forward within Module 1 that, for First Peoples communities, colonisation is a continuing experience regardless of what political party holds government on the day. This position asserts that this is evidenced by thelack of significant self-determination mechanisms available to First Peoples as groups and that the socio-economic status quo,established early in the colonisingproject,has not changed. First Peoples remain the most disadvantagedby this imposed and maintained status quo.

Colonialism History
Colonialization is the most significant factor of Australian history that has a continuing impact even today. It is obvious that the impact of colonialism has resulted in inequity, racism and disrupted the entire cultural unity of the First People in Australia. It is detrimental that several socio-economic factors still continue to be equal and significantly influence the disadvantages faced by the aboriginals of Australia. The indigenous community has invariably faced justice since the arrival of the British in 1788. Up till 1960 the massacre and the ill-treatment of the aboriginal people continued. Between 1910 and 1970 indigenous children were taken away from their families and were assimilated into the non-indigenous family (Reid et al., 2018). It is obvious that they suffered discrimination and were immensely traumatized and are still now searching for their own families even today.  
Impact on Children
The discrimination had a subsequent impact on the children who were often neglected and abused physically, emotionally, and sexually. The assimilation of the white society was so extreme that they are names were changed and they were not permitted to honour they are own culture or speak their own language. This aspect of intergenerational trauma continues even today. According to the findings of the National Inquiry in 1990, it was reported that officially more than 400 aboriginal people died in police custody. It is still relevant to know that in 2022 also aboriginal people constantly fear the justice system which unfairly targets young aboriginal people like Keenan Mundine. Keenan is a 33-year-old body in Australia who runs a small charity of “Deadly Connections” in order to keep young people away from tense relationships with the police. It is fortunate that young people are still chased by police and are brutally treated if they fall into tense conflict with the police (McKemmish et al., 2020). The fear of stolen generation has continuously echoed through intergenerational aspects.
