Research Process Step 3
Research Process Step 3 will give you an opportunity to receive feedback on your thesis as you continue to refine it. Step 4 will demonstrate how you would evaluate an article for relevance and validity.
Step 3:
As mentioned in the criteria for the Fences Research essay, thesis statements should be analytical in nature, avoid the use of first person, the "announcement tone," and can be 1-3 sentences in length. Thesis statements can be implied or explicit. There is an example of a model thesis within the criteria and students may also view the thesis given in the sample research paper under Lecture Notes.
Please present your proposed thesis below: *Note, if play title and author’s name are not in your thesis statement, I am going to assume that you present this information prior to thesis, within your introduction.
Research Process Step 3 due Thursday, November 8. Please submit your thesis within an attached Word doc to facilitate instructor feedback.
Research Process Step 4:
Evaluating a Research Source
Class, please select a research source from one of PGCC’s li
ary databases that you feel could be used to effectively support your thesis and/or points within your essay.
1. What is the name of your article and where was it accessed? (i.e. database title)
2. Who is the author(s) or sponsoring organization (if no author is given)? What can you determine about the credentials/credibility of this author?
3. What is the article about? What is the quality of the information? You may consider the following when answering this question: What is the focus of the text and how thoughtful and research-based is it?
4. When was the article published and/or the website last updated?
5. In a few sentences, discuss how you feel this source and extracted direct quotes and/or paraphrases can help defend your thesis.
Research Process Step 4 due November 18. Please submit as an attached Word doc.
