What Can We Learn from Sheikh Zayed?


Introduction

A leader who changed a desert land to a land of skyscrapers. Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, the founder of the UAE; is a man who shaped the future of his country and its people to where they are now. Sheikh Zayed accomplished goals that were impossible at the time. He united the seven states, enriched the economy with oil and started building schools, hospitals, housing and other infrastructures in a land of sand.

  • What kind of leadership Sheikh Zayed had, to accomplish such goals?

  • Did he include his people and encourage them? How? Why?

  • What are his traits, skills and behavior that he used throughout his life?

The research paper will answer those questions and dive more into the leadership style he implemented. Therefore, the main purpose of this paper is to understand key factors to the success of Sheikh Zayed’s vision from leadership point of view.

The rationale of conducting this research is to learn and maybe implementing it in our vision. We are in a crossroad in Saudi Arabia, how can we achieve our 2030 vision as Sheikh Zayed did decades ago in UAE. Sheikh Zayed started the idea of a stable economy without oil which is what vision 2030 is. He believed that UAE main resource was its people not oil as he said “I have a strong belief that the UAE citizen is the (main) resource of the country and the pillar of civilization.”. The main point of the research is studying the leadership of Sheikh Zayed, nevertheless I will point out through the paper on skills, traits, styles and others we lack in to reach our vision.

Methodology

The primary method for this research is analyzing and using information from books and articles. The search for those sources was done majorly in google scholar and partially PMU eLibrary. The sources were analyzed based on the questions previously mentioned weather they can provide insight or not. There were some books that I wanted to include in this paper but couldn’t find them in the library only on the market.

Introduction
    Behind the prosperity of any country, there is a great contribution of a great leader. Only a great leader with the great qualities can achieve the success. In order to climb the peak of the success there is a huge need of the superior thinking qualities. Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, known as the founder of the United Arab Emirates, is one of the great leaders in the history of the UAE (Al-Mansoori, 2003). With the unrest effort of him the country UAE has turned into a skyscraper from a desert. The future of the country has been kept into a shape of frame by this great leader, sheikh zayed. With his long term vision he decided to achieve a goal which was next to impossible at that time. He took the risk with was impossible to reach at that time. In spite of facing the adversity and challenges he took the initiatives to transform the country. He united seven states and built the school, hospital, houses and other infrastructures that are needed for a country. He took the initiatives and enriched the oil refineries. Here in talking about the contribution of sheikh zayed in the history of UAE, there is no such degree of prise that can offer him.
What kind of Leadership sheikh zayed had to accomplish such goal? Did he include his people and encourage them? How? Why?
    In the field of leadership it can be seen that Sheikh Zayed has taken various kind of leadership approaches in order to accomplish his goal of his life. The UAE was a desert land previously. The hard work and strategy of him made him to achieve the goal. The main inspiration of the leadership style of him was to understanding of the peoples need in UAE. The economical and the social condition of the ancient UAE have made him bounded to take such inspiring steps (Yakheek, 2003). He used to follow the situational style of the leadership in order to accomplish the goal of his life. In case of the transformation of the future of UAE he had taken various types of leadership approaches. At the stage of the transformation he took the democratic approach of the leadership. He talked to his subordinates’ and took the opinion of them. Apart from that through a productive conversation he made the strategy of his planning. By understanding the mental stability of his people he took the suitable steps in his path. Considering the opinion of his people and by understanding the efficiency of the fellows, he appointed them in a suitable work place. In accordance their skill all people did their assigned job.
