ASSESSMENT ITEM THREE
PODCAST
DESCRIPTION

Students will work in small groups to produce a 10-15 minute podcast documenting and describing a
case and/or practice issue related to violence abuse and trauma.

The podcast will focus on the application of knowledge about violence, abuse and trauma and the
development of students' academic skills.

Developing a podcast involves learning the conceptual material, using relevant example and developing
skills in terms of working with others.

The podcast should describe the prevalence and known impacts of the issue at focus, highlight
dynamics of trauma and include a critical evaluation of the contribution theoretical perspectives
and/or other evidence makes to explaining its occu
ence and outcomes.

All planning, preparation, writing, recording and uploading is up to each group to manage in their own
time outside of class.

One person from each group should nominate to upload an audio file and show notes to Blackboard on
the due date.

All students receive the group mark for this assignment.
Length: ‘show notes’ (see below) should not exceed 3000 words, podcasts should be 10mins long.
Weighting: 50% (50 points)
Due Date: Friday 8 November, 2019

Where to begin with this assessment….
• Begin by joining or forming a small group of 4-5 people. Groups should not exceed 5 people.
A wiki sign on sheet will be posted under the assessment tab on blackboard (look for assessment 3
podcast). It is your responsibility to find a group – you will not be placed in a group.
• You should meet with your group and discuss what you would like to focus your podcast on – whether that
will be a particular case, or a particular issue with relevance to violence, abuse and trauma.
• You should consult with ‘group contract’ sheet (see following) and discuss and decide on roles and
esponsibilities. You will each be required to submit a signed copy of your contract identifying who took
what roles and take which responsibilities in the group.
• Groups need to be finalised by week XXXXXXXXXXafter which blackboard groups will be assigned to each.

Developing your podcast.
• Think about developing your podcast in three stages…
Stage 1 - Pre-Production
• Meet with your group and
ainstorm the focus and possible content for your podcast.
• Discuss and plan for research to inform your podcast. You will need to be able to present details such as:
o details of the case or issue that will provide listeners with a good understanding of its occu
ence;
o relevant information about prevalence and known impacts of the issue at focus
o dynamics at play in the case or su
ounding the issue
o relevant theory, concepts, knowledge or evidence that help make sense of the case or issue
o important legislative or policy contexts that inform or influence the case or the issue
• Discuss – What is the logical structure of the discussion? Should we use a script? Who will work on each
portion? Plan a clear structure for your podcast - know what each speaker is going to say. - A good way to
do this is could be to assign one person as the host and the other group members then discuss the topic
taking a specific conceptual or theoretical point of view, with the host mediating between discussants.
• Draft a podcast script/ or storyboard… as a guide you might discuss a total of six points in a 10min podcast
depending on the depth of discussion.
• For all concepts used or discussed, they must be explained. Treat the listener as if they have never heard
of the case and/or the understandings of violence, abuse and trauma discussed - you need to make them
understand the concepts and theories.

Stage 2 - Production
• Decide upon any special effects. Are you going to use music or sound grabs? Will it enhance the listeners
experience? If so select any music or audio clips – making sure you either use sources from creative
commons or you get permission from authors or individuals involved. (this is not a compulsory requirement
and you will not lose marks if you do not use music or clips).
• Think about and design your introduction. The first thing on the podcast recording should be the name of
your podcast – this will serve as your group name. Make sure the name of your podcast appropriately
eferences the case or issues discussed. In beginning your podcast you should provide the full name of all
of the participants in your group and your chosen case or issue.
• Hold recording sessions to produce the podcast, adjusting your script/storyboard as needed if you need to
e-record. Try not read! Hearing someone read off a script is hard to follow. Know your stuff and prepare so
you can talk freely about your topic. - Don’t just regurgitate the course material. Say something about it!
Have fun with it.
• Edit and mix content if desired – ensuring your final version is close to 10mins in length.

Technical Support and Group Work Responsibilities:
• Teaching staff will not be providing technical support or help on how to do the recording. There are many
apps and programs to do is, with huge amounts of online support on YouTube and the like. To be clear,
one of the things we are assessing is how as a group you can work together, source information and learn
to do things independently.
• As students may be already familiar with technology to make podcast recordings, we do not mind what you
use as long as it is in a common type of file, and the file is relatively small, and it can be uploaded
successfully.
• One particular simple free and user friendly App is Opinion. It is free to use for to make 10min
ecordings, so it has the added bonus of making you pay for anything over that, which is a good incentive to
keep it under the time limit! Other options are presented on Blackboard.

• There will be no extensions for losing files, computer crashes, lost laptops, hard drives and other technical
mishaps. This means that you need to prepare early, ensure that there are shared copies of files, etc.

Stage 3 – Post-Production
• Work on your ‘show notes’
• In addition to your audio file; each podcast group will need to submit a document titled with your podcast
name and ‘show notes’ ie… “The case of Leigh Leigh Show notes”. This file should be uploaded by one
group member only on the due date. Show notes should not exceed 3000 words total and should include
the following information:
o Full names of all group members
o The name of your podcast and a
ief summary or outline of the podcast that could be used to
inform potential listeners, imagery or picture that would be used to illustrate or caption your podcast
o A discussion of the following :
o details of the case or issue
o relevant information about prevalence and known impacts of the issue at focus
o dynamics at play in the case or su
ounding the issue
o relevant theory, concepts, knowledge or evidence that help make sense of the case or issue
o important legislative or policy contexts that inform or influence the case or the issue
o Your completed group contract.



Guidelines for working in a small group…
When meeting with your small group and working on the task together, please discuss and remind yourselves of the
following prompts and guidelines for good group work practice.
Participation
• Agree to everyone participating in the activity
• Agree that everyone should have opportunity for equal participation
• Respect individual points of view
• Strive for honesty and practice of good communication within the group at all times
Support
• Provide emotional support to everyone in the group. Learning new skills can be difficult and we all need
encouragement to get through the tough bits

Focus
• Maintain a focus on the main work of the day and check that sidetracks are constructive and time-limited

Individual Responsibility
• Individuals should take responsibility for themselves and their own learning
• Speak up if something is not working well for you
• Think about what you need to feel safe and make choices with this in mind
• Although you will at times be discussing your own thoughts, feelings and reactions to situations, you need
to remember that you, your fellow students and the teaching staff are engaged in a collaborative learning
endeavour and not counselling or therapy. This is important to consider when developing good practice
around setting appropriate professional boundaries.
Group Responsibility
• Keep a check on how you are working as a group and be prepared to discuss and change your processes if
needed in order for the group to develop a good trusting environment to maximise learning opportunities
Confidentiality
• Students should keep personal self-disclosures by other students confidential within the group
• Students can of course discuss their own learning outside the group and there are times when this may be
very useful

• Start and finish on time
• Each session agree on time for a
