Salmonella species are Gram-negative, flagellated, rod-shaped, facultative, anaerobic bacilli that majorly affects the small intestine and causes food poisoning. It is a zoonotic disease, transmitted from animals to humans. Most of the infections spread to humans are usually due to uncooked food like eggs, meat, beef etc. Contaminated fruits and vegetables can cause the infection as the bacteria are shed through faeces.
