You are required to write a response paper for one of the two following topics. You are not
allowed to submit two papers. Please read the following instructions carefully, including the
prompts for the specific topic options and the general instructions that follow (give special attention

Option 1: Global Foreign Policy Responses to the Rise of China
Many IR scholars and practitioners agree that the rise of China in both economic and military terms
has had a significant impact on the structure of global politics. This has led to the debate over how
the US and other states affected by this phenomenon should change the course of their foreign

consider yourself an advisor to the head of that country’s government.
In your paper, address the following issues:
Describe what impact the rise of China has on that country.
Discuss one pair of competing policy options for that country to deal with the rise of China. Try to
predict the anticipated effects of each of the competing policies on that country. It would be
useful to consider some of the advantages and disadvantages for each of the potential policies.
For example, "balancing" vs "bandwagoning" could be such a pair. Another example of
competing policies could be "deepening economic ties" vs "reducing interdependence." You can
discuss one of these pairs or a different pair of competing policies.
In addition, for each of the policy options, consider whether it would be compatible with one of
the theoretical approaches that we have learned in the course. You could refer either to
overarching approaches (like Realism, Liberalism, etc.) or to specific theories (such as Defensive
Realism, Offensive Realism, Commercial Peace, etc.).

Guidelines for Writing the Paper:
Academic honesty: We will be using the Turnitin originality check service to detect cases of
suspected plagiarism. This means that the text that you submit will be automatically compared
to other texts that exist in Turnitin's database (including work by other students and published
articles). Plagiarism constitutes a serious academic misconduct and we are obliged to report all
instances of alleged academic misconduct to the Committee of Academic Misconduct. Make

shorter than 3 pages are unlikely to be sufficiently thorough.
General writing guidelines:
Adequately answer the questions that are specified in the prompt of your chosen topic.
Use the sources that are pointed to in the prompt, to the extent that is appropriate to answe
the questions and advance your arguments.
It is usually beneficial to include an introduction paragraph and a conclusion paragraph.
Clearly state your main argument in your introduction paragraph, and elaborate on it in the
est of the paper with supportive arguments and evidence.
Provide factual evidence from credible sources to support your arguments and properly cite
them.

All sources should be cited in-text at the appropriate paragraphs, and additionally in a
eference list / bibliography at the end of the paper (the latter does not count against you
page limit). See more information about citation styles below.
Cite at least two quality sources that are not websites, in addition to the articles that are
linked in the prompt. To clarify, a source that is available online but exists in hard copy, such
as a newspaper or journal article, does not count as a website source for this purpose.
