Google Unethical Practices for Sustainable Development
Introduction
The report aims to illustrate the involvement of Google in unethical practices for
environmental harms. It presents analysis of an incident that is caused by the ignorance
played by company in question. It also supports findings of analysis with a literature review.
Report winds up with recommendations to manage sustainable development initiatives.
Google unethical practices
Google is the prime example of unethical practices that violate sustainability factors. Even it
has won the award for ethical practices from Ethisphere, it still practices unethical practices.
Previously Google Company practiced censoring information in the china. The concealed
information actually served purposes of Chinese government. Recently Google has been
hiding information about the gender discrimination practices that caused issues for women
workers. Its women force accused of getting low promotion and wage than the male people.
It was an outright violation of first amendment of USA. This article is chosen to reveal that
Google has been involved in unsustainable initiatives. Other information regarding Google
proves it.
The rights of people were clearly violated such as freedom of speech. Company was asked to
emove undesired links of people by European community. EC also deprived company to
hold the rights of getting information about people. Google company was found
unaccountable, and therefore people were afraid the misuse of data.
The tax evasive practices of google also reflect same unethical practiced. Company did not
pay taxes to the government for welfare activities and shifted its base to those countries that
were tax heaven countries. People protested against this unethical move even it was
sufficiently legal, it was not addressing the causes of local people.
Sustainable development also requires listening to employees but on this front also, Google
Company does not do well as its diversity report reveals. Minority percentage in total
workforce of Google is not at acceptable standards and lower percentage of women and
minority communities members in the work force reflect that Google does not consider to
promote diversity in organization.
Google company that is a leading IT company in the world has been blamed by Shannon
(2014) for tax evasive practices, violations of copyrights, spending for lo
ying, unfair
cooperation with Chinese government to restrain free speech, trespassing, contact sniping,
electronic policy violation and lax advertising content control.
BHP Billiton and mining industry has been violating the sustainability factor for a long time.
This case analysis also considers the violation of ethical principles in mining sector.
Samaratan incident. It is the worst environmental hazards in Brazil in recent years, and BHP
Billiton is blamed for unethical practices.
Article states that BHP Billiton did not live up to the expectations of managing the dam with
utmost care or following the OECD guidelines. The report further states that state
environmental prosecutor said that it is not an accident but negligence by the companies
involved in operation. In 2013, an assessment was conducted by the independent Brazilian
company Pristino that highlighted concerns about the tailing dam integrity and offered
ecommendations to not renew the licence but its appeal was ignored.
The accident caused many deaths and complete destruction of environmental resources
around the area. These consequences were taken place against increased production costs,
and commodity price increase s well as pressure for licence approvals quickly. International
commission on the large dams recommends that these factors are associated with the serious
tailing storage failure emergence in the recent years. Report illustrates the issues of poor
maintenance by BHP Billiton to consider environmental threats the dam was posing. There
should have been a responsibility plated by the company to identify, mitigate and prohibit the
adverse consequences.
Therefore report concludes that BHP Billiton company must improve due diligence towards
managing all operations. Report further asks that stakeholders of company have right to know
the initiatives taken by BHP Billiton after the 2013 instituto pristine report. The stakeholders
need to ask environmental and social impact of BHP Billiton operation as the article indicates
(Szoke, 2015).
Against the backdrop of this incident, it is crucial to know what BHP Billiton has done till
now to manage environmental issues. It is identified that there are various causes of failure
for sustainable development programs. The lack of management support has been main
eason from company to manage environmental issues.
The simple biggest reason is only the lack of top management support. When senior
management does not endorse environmental resources protection, other people in
organization certainly lack enthusiasm to maintain issues of society and environment.
Company approach towards sustainability development is not sufficient. This is evident by
the approach of management to develop in corporate social responsibility for promotion of
and image only.
BHP Billiton invests only 1 percent for serving community needs (Mehra, 2015). Lack of
changes initiatives towards business operation and work decisions and an attitude to maintain
status quo are also responsible for poor management of sustainability factor.
Internal analysis of company reveals shocking findings about its work culture practices. It
was forced to pay penalty of $25 million in 2015 to SEC as company infringed FCPA by
sponsoring the foreign government officials. It reveals that company wanted to form a nexus
with the government officers to win the pending contract negotiations (FreeHills, 2015).
This case reflects strong evidences of poor work culture in the BHP Billiton company.
Findings reveal that company is blamed for widespread destruction of environment (RepRisk,
2010). Company is accused to destroy the traditional livelihood, human rights abuse, and
indigenous people rights infringement. The changes that are initiated by BHP Billiton do not
eveal great success for diversity management and sustainability.
The analysis also reveals other unethical practices of Face book that is a leading social site in
the world. It has used the data of customers without their prior consent and this is a clear
privacy violation by company. This incident caused company to suffer from widespread
criticism.
Next company is Nestle that is a leading FMCG company but its own conduct to promote
milk formulae to the new born baby mothers in unethical way was even criticised by NGOs
and people all around the world. Company was criticised for promoting the baby milk
formula over baby feeding by women.
