1. Three major classifications of casting processes are:
1) Pressure die casting:
ï‚· It is most commonly used for Al, Zn, Mg castings i.e. having low melting point.
ï‚· High production rates with close dimensional control can be achieved.
ï‚· It is not suitable for materials having high melting point
ï‚· The dies used in pressure die casting are usually very costly.
2) Centrifugal casting:
ï‚· Both horizontal and vertical centrifugal castings are widely used in industry.
ï‚· It is highly suitable for axisymmetric parts.
ï‚· In this very high strength of casting is obtained.
ï‚· The process is widely used for large batch production.
3) Investment casting:
ï‚· It is refe
ed to as lost-wax casting as the pattern is made up of wax.
ï‚· Materials with very high melting temperature can be casted easily by this process.
ï‚· It is primarily used for high batch size production.
ï‚· Very high surface finish and dimensional accuracy can be achieved by this process.
c) From the above mentioned methods investment casting should be prefe
ed for
the production process as this process close dimensional accuracy, high surface finish
with economical costs can be achieved for large batch size production.
2. a) Methods of coating for protection against co
osion are:

1) Painting:
ï‚· It is an effective way to protect the host from co
osion.
ï‚· However, the paint will
eakdown over time with the flowing fluid or due to the
chemical reaction. Hence exposing the surface for co
osion to take place.
2) Plating:
ï‚· It involves use of electric cu
ent for coating a metal with a thin layer of another
metal that acts as a protective ba
ier.
ï‚· Drawback of plating is that if the plating fails over a small...
