CONSTRUCTION 01, 2019 | FINAL ASSIGNMENT (40%) | DUE: 19/20 Fe
uary
MAIN TASK: Develop a set of construction documents for a two storey ‘retreat’ (under 50 sq.m.)
using AutoCAD, and explain your approach in regards to materiality and context.
Part 1 - Construction Documentation:
Ø UPLOAD your digital (pdf. AND dwg. Format) Construction Documentation Set to MYUNI before 5pm
on 19 Fe
uary.
Ø 1 x A3 size bound Construction Documentation Set AND Physical Detail Model to be submitted to
the Front Office before 2pm on 20 Fe
uary.
For this part you will need to develop a set of AutoCAD drawings complete with all dimensions, hatching and
annotations identifying the various materials and processes.
Refer to your AutoCAD workshops from for further clarification.
You will then need to organise these drawings into a Construction Documentation Set including the following
as a minimum (and bound in this order). Use this as a preliminary Checklist:
DOCUMENTATION SET PAGES:
- Cover sheet with Contents List
- Floor Plans (both levels)
- Roof Plan
- All Elevations
- 2 Sections – one of which needs to cut through the staircase.
- 6 details developed at a scale of 1:10 or 1:5 (1 must include stair)
CHECKLIST
- Appropriate Scales
- Title Blocks (check title, page numbers and scale on each page)
- Cross referencing
- Appropriate Lineweights & text sizes
- Section Cut lines & Detail References
- Dimensioning
- Annotations and / or tags for all materials (The more information & detail = the better)
- Hatching (NOTE: Section hatching is different to elevation hatching!)
Refer to the Lecture on Construction Documentation for further clarification.
Assessment Criteria:
- Ability to use AutoCAD to develop and present construction drawings.
- Ability to employ professional standards for drawing communication and presentation in construction.
- Understanding of Australian and local standards for construction and material specifications.
Part 2 – Tectonic Culture:
Ø 300 words explaining your design and construction approach in regards to materiality and structure.
(Why did you choose certain materials / structural systems). Upload to the Text Box of ‘Final
Assignment’ before 5pm on 19 Fe
uary (As well as your digital Construction Set Submission).
Ø Craft a 3-dimensional physical model of ONE of your construction details (scale 1:5 / 1:10 depending
on chosen detail. Discuss with tutor). Choose a detail which reveals the intent/meaning/ of your
design. Submit to Front Office by 2pm 20th Fe
uary
Explain your choice of structural system and materials in regards to the topics discussed, which might range
from architectonic considerations of joinery to spatial concerns of affect. For instance, you could engage in a
discussion about the tectonic or steretomic nature of your assembly in regards to the chosen structural system
and material, or tactile considerations of the act of making, or cultural considerations of symbolism, or even
philosophical consideration of ontology etc.
Assessment Criteria:
- Understanding of structural systems and tectonic culture in shaping architectural construction & design.
- Ability to engage theoretical approaches to materiality and construction in design.
- Craftsmanship of physical model detail.
