WHS Requirements
Hierarchy of risk control
The ways of controlling risks are rank from the highest level of protection and
eliability to the lowest as shown on the diagram below. This is known as the
hierarchy of risk control in the workplace.
Personal Safety
Workers have responsibilities too to take reasonable care of their own safety and
ensure they don’t impact on the health and safety of fellow worker, customers or
visitors. They must comply with reasonable instructions and so-operate with any work
health and safety policies and procedures that are in place.
Whenever you perform any task in the workplace you must use some form of
personal protective clothing and equipment that is appropriate for the task and
conforms to the local safety regulations and policies. Among other items, these may
include:
• Work clothing - such as overalls / shirt, pants and steel-capped footwear.
• Eye protection - such as safety glasses / goggles or face mask.
• Ear protection - such as earmuffs and earplugs required in noisy conditions.
• Hand protection - such as ru
er gloves and or ba
ier cream.
• Respiratory equipment - such as face mask or respirator.
• Make sure that you understand and observe all legislative and personal
safety procedures when ca
ying out any of the following tasks.
WH&S requirements are to be in accordance with legislation / regulations / code of
practice and enterprise safety policies and procedures. These may include
protective clothing and equipment, use of tooling and equipment, workplace
environment and safety, handling of

Personal protective equipment is to include that prescribed under legislation /
egulations / code of practice and workplace policies and practices.
Protective Clothing

You must always wear the right kind of clothing for your work.
This includes:
• One-piece overalls or separate shirt and pants
• Cuffs that button up and fit well around the wrists – but not too tight
• Pants without cuffs – to avoid trapping sparks or slag from hot work
• Flame retardant or cotton - so it can’t catch fire easily
• Strong enough - so that it can’t be damaged or torn
• Comfortable enough - so you can move around and stretch to reach items
• Not loose – so your clothes can’t catch on machinery and drag you into
danger.
