SOLAS is an a
eviated form of International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea. The
surveyor can question and cross check the knowledge of staff for whether they can react
sufficiently in troubled waters or not. All the staff should fulfill all the criteria as per the
standards of the SOLAS. It is also one of the oldest, the first version having been adopted at a
conference held in London in 1914. The incident which led to the convening of the 1914
Conference on Safety of Life at Sea was the sinking of the Titanic on her maiden voyage in April
1912, when more than 1,500 passengers and crew died. The appendix to this module shows the
IMO’s document detailing the changes that have come about as a consequence of the Titanic
disaster.
A surveyor should pay due attention to his personal safety as well as the safety of other persons
involved with the survey. A responsible officer from the ship’s staff should always accompany
the surveyor to provide the necessary assistance and communication with the ship’s crew. On no
account should a surveyor enter dark and unventilated spaces without the proper precautions,
which include sighting of a gas-free certificate. When visiting oil or gas ca
iers, care must be
taken to use intrinsically safe equipment such as torches. The use of digital cameras and other

so that they can properly function at the time of requirement. The provision of lifeboats for

Examinations conducted by the Marine Surveyor on Lifeboats;
 Hull of the ship must not be damaged externally or internally.
 There must be no sign of unprofessional or temporary repairs in the lifeboats.
 Lifting hooks of the lifeboat must be examined properly for rust and damages for proper
functioning at the time of any accidents. Hooks of the lifeboats are examined for

osion and any other defects. Examination also depends on the type of lifeboats used.
 In case of timber lifeboats they are analyzed for cuts in the wood which can damage
them.
 Maximum no of life boats must be lower in to the water and should be checked for gears
and their stability in water.
 Life boats should be examined for its fire extinguisher system, machinery,

etc. Boats should be efficient to ca
y people in case of any emergency.
 Those life boats which are mechanically propelled should be examined by the surveyor
for the engine efficiency and its capability in waters.
