Please follow the instructions below to successfully complete the asynchronous online
class meeting in Week 5 of Social Work 441. Please do not hesitate to contact the instructor with
any questions or concerns.
1. Read the following assigned readings:
a. Chapter 3 (Kirst-Ashman & Hull, 2018)
2. Watch the recorded lecture on Chapter 3: Practice Skills for Working with Groups
a. Note: The lectures are split into Part 1 and Part 2.
3. Watch the recorded interview: Voices From the Field – An Interview with Robin Wingo,

4. Watch the YouTube video: Co-Facilitation of an Elementary School Girls Group
5. Explore support groups available in the State of Minnesota.
a. Use the three links provided on D2L to explore groups available locally and
across Minnesota.
. Conduct your own search looking for groups in your hometown, in the
community where you cu
ently live, a community you hope to relocate to
someday, or groups with a specific purpose you are curious about (therapy,
educational, social, growth, task, etc):
6. Online Assignment 2: Write a
ief (1-2 page) reflection paper about an experience you
have had in a group. The type of group (task or treatment) is less important than the
experience of being in a group. You might consider a high school team/clu

team, a college class, a social group, a therapy group, a
family group, a skills group, a socialization group, a task group, etc. Respond to the
prompts below in your paper citing the textbook as appropriate. Turn this reflection
paper into the Online Assignment 1 drop box by Sunday, Fe
uary 7.
a. Reflect upon the type and purpose of the group.
. In addition, describe the experience of being a member of the group from the way
the group moved through the stages of becoming a group (group development),
to the way the group may have navigated conflict, to the way group decisions
were made, to the group’s norms and values.
c. Reflect on your thoughts about one day facilitating a group as a social worker. Is
it something you can see yourself doing? Why or why not?
d. Finally, describe new understanding you have (at least two examples) about the
way micro-practice skills for working with individuals (outlined in Chapter 2)
are critical to doing effective group work.
