The purpose of the paper is to find and identify themes or messages in the movie that
epresent common values, morals, or stereotypes that exist in society and potentially
contribute to inequality. For example, you may find that a certain movie contains common
gender stereotypes about men and women (strength, helplessness, protector, savior versus
eing saved, etc.). You may also find that the same movie contains a theme about a certain
value or moral that is widely accepted in the United States (patriotism, revenge, individualism,
what love or ma
iage is supposed to look like, violence, etc). You will be writing about what
you find.
The following questions should help guide you and be addressed in your paper:
1. What are the SOCIOLOGICAL themes of the movie that you found? Make sure they
elate to this class.
2. How are they sociologically significant (in other words, what impact do these ideas have
on society)?
3. How often is the theme/s reinforced? Does it occur only
iefly, or is present
throughout the movie?
4. Do you personally see the theme/s as problematic? Why or why not? Example – if the
movie shows depictions of women needing men to be rescued, do you think that is okay
ecause women and men are different, or do you think it perpetuates gender
stereotypes and contributes to the subordination of women in society?
5. Are there any themes that go against social convention? In other words, send a message
that challenges dominant ideas and culture. Describe them.

8. Student describes frequency of the theme – example – The movie showed women in a
sexualized way throughout the film (yes, children’s movies sexualize women). OR maybe
it only occu
ed once.
9. Student shows good application of “The Sociological Imagination”, describing how
social structures or norms create the theme and/or how the theme contributes to or
perpetuates the problem.
10. Papers should be pages double-spaced. Use Times New Roman font size 12 - MINIMUM
800 words

TO FIND AND IDENTIFY THEMES OR MESSAGES IN A G-RATED MOVIE THAT REPRESENT COMMON VALUES, MORALS, OR STEREOTYPES THAT EXIST IN SOCIETY AND POTENTIALLY CONTRIBUTE TO INEQUALITY
The purpose of the paper is to identify themes in a G-rated movie that are sociological in nature, however contribute to inequality. The first movie that came to my mind after reading the topic was Disney’s Sleeping Beauty. As a young child I was awed by the world of fairy tales and watched every tale possible in or outside Disney. Like most of us it started with Cinderella and went on. There was one movie that I knew the story of, however I have never seen it on a screen. Aurora, the famous Sleeping Beauty is commercially Disney’s most expensive animated movie released in 1959. The movie has been appealing to viewers across all age groups and since then has been re-made and played in theaters. The movie is visually appealing and tells a story of a young girl who is a royal by birth as written by Charles Pe
ault. The story’s villain, Maleficent, casts Aurora upon a spell at birth. She announces that the child will die by piercing her finger on a spinning wheel when she turns sixteen. Aurora’s parents who have been childless since many years asks the good fairies Flora, Fauna and Me
yweather to reverse the curse however, the curse is strong and Me
yweather’s magic could only weaken the curse. Thus, instead of death,...
