Social Work Practice IIInterview Analysis Assignment – Assignment #2
Interview Analysis Assignment – Assignment #2
Summary Page
This assignment is a follow-up to Assignment 1 in which you wrote a helping interview dialogue. For this assignment you are to analyze the interview written in Assignment 1 using two specific techniques: 1) The Carkhuff Empathic Understanding scale and 2) the list of types of helping skills. The purpose of this assignment is for you to develop an analytical perspective on what goes on in an interview and being able to identify what may or may not be helpful response to client statements.
Steps:
1) The Carkhuff Empathic Understanding Scale:            [right margin]
     a) Put an asterisk (*) in the right margin of your interview by each client statement that has either explicit or implicit feeling content. "Explicit" means the client used one of the feeling words (I'm really angry), while "implicit" means one can infer there are feelings present from what they said (My dog died).
     b) Rate the worker's responses to each of these asterisked statements on the Level 1 to Level 5 scale that was discussed in class. Write these scores in the right margin next to the worker responses.
     c) Use the attached form to summarize the distribution of worker response levels.
2) Helping Skills List:                            [left margin]
     a) Using the numbered list of helping skills at the bottom of this page, put the appropriate number(s) in the left margin next to each of the worker's statements. Note that the numbers are just labels -- higher numbers do not mean "better" skills.
     b) When you have scored each response, summarize your findings on the attached form.
3) Analysis:
     a) Review the results of the two analysis techniques and reflect in writing what this tells you about your interview. Emphasize your assessment of skills and techniques -- avoid generalities. How do you see the connection between social work skills and social work values now, compared to when you wrote the dialogue?
     b) Submit a paper copy of your scored interview, your completed summary page, and your written analysis.
Helping Skills List:
        1) Simple attending responses         7) Reflecting client feelings
        2) Paraphrasing                 8) Identifying client strengths
        3) Clarifying                     9) Summarizing
        4) Closed-ended questions         10) Reframing into new vision
        5) Open-ended questions     11) Confronting discrepancies
        6) Reflecting client words            12) Self-disclosure
