Introduction
When I first began to study Social science, my ideas of the profession were vastly different to my cu
ent understanding. On reflection, I realised that my motivation on studying Social science was to understand the basic social, cultural, political, economic, and psychological issues and thereby gather skills of how to manage those problematic areas. However, after three years of my studies my focus has now shifted towards understanding the social and cultural aspects in social science and develop several skills such as observational skills, interpersonal skills, communication skills and implementation skills and am now able to produce a clean perspective accordingly.
First year courses and reflections
In my first year I completed introduction to contemporary society, this unit developed my understanding of sociology and allowed me to reflect critically on the history of the social and human sciences as well as mass media and their contributions to shaping contemporary society. It also introduced me to different theories of socialisation such as psychosocial theory, social learning theory, psychoanalytic theory, and behaviourism. This strengthened my knowledge about human behaviour and understanding of the culture, values, beliefs, sentiments and human perception and I was able to use observational skills to see these within society. With this newfound knowledge and understanding I wrote a reflective essay analysing how two agencies of socialisation contributed to my secondary socialisation. One major leaning from this assignment was that if taught the good norms and values through the agencies of socialization such as family, school, religion and the media, children will grow into respectable members of society able to shun away from social evils such as discrimination, among other social issues relating to social inequality (Jokisaari & Nurmi, 2009).
In the unit cultural diversity, I was introduced to the concept of cultural diversity and what means in Australia today. I gained an understanding of socio-cultural theories and an appreciation for the way in which culture can operate at individual, societal, organisational, and even global levels. My reflective essay of cultural experiences highlighted the importance of communication skills particularly within the multicultural communities in Australia where about 20% of people speak languages other than the national language, English (Ushioda & Dornyei 2009). This unit also focused on inclusion and exclusion from a cultural perspective, and the legislation that attempts to address these issues. I conducted a case study where I interviewed an Australian Aboriginal and analysed their life experiences and social needs. I was then able to understand the importance of establishing respectful, culturally safe worker-client relationships and how important communication skills are to this.
I also completed the unit psychology of health and wellness. this unit enabled me to analyse the role of socioeconomic status on health and wellness and explain the role of psychological and behavioural factors in health and wellness. In my academic essay “Health and wellness are more than the absence of disease.” I was able to conclude health and wellness is more than the absence of disease because of four factors that impact the overall health and wellness of an individual these are biological, behavioral, environmental and psychological factors. Psychology of health and wellness also covered several psychosocial interventions to health and wellness, and I was able to implement these into a case study. Through this case study I was able to use the wellness wheel model formwork to apply Intellectual, physical, emotional, social, spiritual, social and occupational dimensions to promote a person to engage in self-reflection, and initiate changes for wellness (Myers & Sweeney, 2008). This particularly helped me to gain implementing skills that can be applied to a real-world setting.
Therefore, from this year of course I have gained Observational Skills, which a social science student should posse in order to understand the human behaviour and accordingly gather the knowledge in specific areas such as in identifying the cultural values, social and economic values. This accordingly serves my responsibilities in a society. As stated by Rust et al. (2017) in order to understand the cultural beliefs, I tried to observe the basic human behaviours, which can be of various kinds such as pessimistic, optimistic, envious and trusting kind of behaviour. I found these types of people, met them in my professional world and observe their role in our community. Getting me mixed up with a huge cultural atmosphere therefore changed my views towards my learning social science rather it enlarged my conceptions of whatever knowledge I had gained earlier.
Secondly, I have developed my Communication Skills due to which I can now recognize easily the different cultural outlooks of different people from different cultural backgrounds. I had learnt to gather information through interacting with various multilingual peoples. Therefore, I have enhanced my communication skills in order to understand the feelings and cultural sentiments of several people of different regions. According to van Atteveldt and Peng (2018), different cultural background therefore inherits different languages and cultural belief.
Thirdly, I developed the Implementing skills where I assembled all the knowledge learnt from social science and finally relating it with the real world through both case studies and experiencing my own struggles. Through interpreting various theories, and my understanding of disciplines such as sociology and psychology I am now able to analyse cases and implement strategies that promote change in both individuals and society. Through the constitutional laws and human rights, I understood the major problems underlying in our country. In my professional areas, I can discuss these problematic areas and motivate the others to think about these. Personally, I hope to build a better society by developing the above-mentioned skills, which have helped me in my professional areas while dealing with several clients and colleagues.
Second Year Course and Reflection
In my second year I have completed several mental health policies and practices which includes six stigmas and how we discriminate the peoples with mental health disorders. This unit developed my understanding of psychology and allowed me to reflect critically on the history of the Schizophrenia, a mental disorder where people usually behave like an abnormal while interpreting the reality as well as managing the ambiguities and over simplify the complex situations in our contemporary society. It also introduced me to the as stated by Barnwell, (2018) Durkheim’s social theory which make me understand about the compelling power of social cu
ents, and allows us to rethink about the division between the structure and effect and the idea of ‘pre-social’. This strengthened my knowledge about human behaviour and their mental disorder by understanding their cultural values and beliefs, their sentiments and human perception and now I can use my observational skills to see these impact within society. This study also introduced me the social theory of same sex ma
iage which highlights the perspectives of Sexuality and Individualization. With this newfound knowledge and understanding I wrote a reflective essay analysing how mental disorder can be prevented and how counselling skills helped in this regard and how to manage the ambiguities and changes on the successful and unsuccessful companies. One major leaning from this assignment was that if the mental disorder that threatened the mental health of a child can be prevented and if their decision is given importance and prioritised then these children can shine better in future with good norms and value and thereby can grow into respectable and responsible members of society who can now face the reality without fearing and can take decisions of their own about sexuality. In the unit of Environmental Society which is closely related with Social science, I introduced the concept of individuality which goes with the present perspectives of Australia today as society teaches us the basic norms, values, moral respects, cultures, diversities, discipline that makes the development of individuality. On the other hand, environment is an area where we after adopting the value represent ourselves as a genuine human being. Therefore, through environmental education I gained an understanding of the basic environmental issues related with geographical, historical, economic, social, and political context of several countries including Australia.
