Tocqueville’s observations about the American society in the 1830s, to some 
extent, still apply today. There are certain qualities of the American society and 
American populace which has remained almost same as it were during the time of 
Tocqueville. With an objective to study about democracy and to have a firsthand 
experience about the mode of life and objectives of life in an orderly democracy the 
Frenchman Tocqueville came to the America and he found some significant principles of 
the American society and about the objectives of the American citizens which have 
remained somewhat unchanged even today.  
Tocqueville observed that “A native of the United States clings to this world’s 
goods as if he were certain never to die; and he is so hasty in grasping at all within his 
reach that one would suppose he was constantly afraid of not living long enough to 
enjoy them” (1835). And this attitude is still prevailing among the Americans. In this era 
of consumerism, the Americans are up to grabbing all the comforts of life and are ready 
to sacrifice all their happiness in the pursuit of those commodities which are going to 
provide them technological advancement, luxury, and an complex kind of fun.
