1)How long have you been teaching?

This is my twentieth year teaching.

2)What time do you arrive at school and what time do you leave?

I get to school around 7:20 am and leave at 3:30 pm.

3)How much time do you spend outside of school doing school related work?

I know that I am more of the exception than the rule on this question. I work really hard to do all of my school related work at school. In my early years of teaching I spent hours grading papers, planning lessons, writing tests/quizzes, etc. Now that I know how to do those things, I can do them in a lot less time. If I fall behind on grading I will bring papers home to grade. I brought papers home to grade tonight, and spent about 45 minutes grading them. I would say that I only grade papers at home once or twice a month. Most nights I just spend time replying to emails that my students send me. It usually takes 5-10 minutes.

a.Can you describe what type of work this is?

Grading papers, prepping lessons, answering emails, writing letters of recommendation, filling out paperwork for student teachers, etc.

4)How would you describe your teaching style?

Since I teach math, I would say most days my style is demonstrating. I do quite a bit of showing students how to do solve a problem and explaining the steps. I mix in group work and student-centered activities as well.

5)How do you motivate students to work to their full potential?

I make my expectations and objectives clear from the beginning of the year. Students know that they are in a safe, supportive environment. I encourage students and celebrate their successes, even if they are small. I have high expectations for all of my students, but give them attainable goals.

6)From all your years in teaching, which event or whom taught you the most about how to be a good teacher?

I can’t really think of just one event. As a teacher, you have to have a growth mindset. I am constantly evaluating my lessons and my teaching and making changes. The mistakes that I have made throughout the years have helped me see what not to do, and become a better teacher.

7)What is the most challenging part about being a teacher?

That’s tough. It really depends on the day. There could be a day where you have a negative encounter with a parent. Dealing with some parents can be stressful. Another day a student could act out in your class. Sometimes a lesson doesn’t go the way you envisioned. Another day a student might be struggling with a serious personal issue and it affects you emotionally. Being a teacher isn’t easy!

8)What do you like best about being a teacher?

I like that I get the opportunity to interact with my students on a daily basis and have an influence on their lives. I love to see the look on a student’s face when he finally understands a concept that he was struggling with. Even though I teach math every day, each day (and year) is different because of the students I teach. It’s awesome to have students come back to visit after they graduate to say that you had a positive impact on their lives.

9)How do you think I, as a student, should prepare as I enter the teaching profession?

Teaching other college students is not the same as teaching children. As much as you may practice teaching in your college classes, teaching children is totally different. Teach in classrooms as much as possible. That is the best practice you can get.

The school considered for making the observation report is Walther Christian Academy based in Chicago and is a reputed school known for welcoming and nurturing the students from all the communities. The school provides education for the students studying in high school and middle school. The school is located at 900 Chicago Ave. There are Melrose Park and Walton Street in the neighborhood of the school (Garrett and Steinberg, 2015). The school has been chosen because of the presence of inter-racial students in all the grades. It signifies the sense of international unity and respect for all the communities of the world. It is expected that the behaviour of the students would be mixed; some of the students would be paying attention to the class and some would be busy talking to each other and having fun when the lecture is going on. It will be interesting to see the camaraderie among the students who are from different races (Cartwright and Cartwright, 1974). It is also expected that the students will be putting extra effort to understand the English language because it might not be every body’s native language. Their support and fun related activities with each other will be treated as a piece of learning from the experience of observation of the students. The Other important point to be learned from the students would be the extra efforts that they would put to understand foreign language and culture (Garrett and Steinberg, 2015).
