1.0 Role leaders and managers play in the operations function of an organization
Operations management is a core management function in any organization, i
espective of its core functional area. Operations management works on to plan, coordinate and control diverse managerial functions in any organization. The key objective of the organization is to manage the resources needed for the generation of the goods and services from the organizations. Ultimately operational management works on to provide effective and efficient services to the organization. Efficient in the sense, it will restrict the quantity of the resources needed for the processing, effective in the sense that they will meet the end objectives of the consumer in right manner.
2.1Key approaches to Operations Management
Effective operation of operations management can be achieved by numerous activities that work for the betterment of the organizational performance. More specifically operations management will have diverse operational functions like production, marketing, HR, IS, Quality, Finance etc. The operations manager will coordinate all these functions by means of respective departmental managers. Both direct and indirect methods will be employed in this regard to improve the functional efficiency of operations management(Heizer,2016).
The three key approaches to operations management are six sigma, lean production, and Total quality management.
Six Sigma
Six Sigma is a management strategy that works for the betterment of the organizational productivity. For example, Six Sigma will work to improve the production systems quality in any organization. For six Sigma any process that will not contribute to the right quality of the production is a defect and it essentially will require improvement of the quality. Six sigma refines the production processes to make them more efficient and more quality oriented.
Systematic implementation of six sigma is essential for the success of the project. The six phases of six sigma are define, measure, Analyze, improve and control. The first phase will identify the fault in the system, the second part of the plan will actually measure the deviation of the quality from the established standards, Analysis phase will work to assess the conditions of the process and will work to improve further the parts which are not very much in line with the actual operational expectations. The Improve phase of the operations will work to further improve the operational gaps and makes the system more effective and finally the control phase institutionalize the changes and makes the process flow smoothly and with maximum quality.
It is proven strategy to augment the business performance. Particularly, suitable for large and complex production operations which are cost intensive. The procedures are flexible and suitable for any type of organizations and the results are really appreciable. Benefits include improving the productivity of the products, improves the quality of the outcomes from the project. Also, the process works for the betterment of the overall process productivity (Haksever, 2018).
Lean production
Lean production methods work on to reduce the waste in the process flow lines. The process is very much oriented to reduce the labor and the cost of the process. Finally, the overall cost of the production process will reduce with the use of lean production systems, The speed of the production processes, the efficiency of the production processes as well as the quality improvement procedures are the techniques employed for the lean production.
The key phases of the lean production process contain adding value to the product from the customer perspective, all the steps in the process flow line will be introspected and anything that does not add the perceived value to the product will be eliminated from the production system.
