Mythology in Literature
Introduction
The relationship between literature and mythology is almost as old as the origins of literature. The earliest form of literature, the oral form, was born out of the myths of early civilizations, looking for recreation in the form of narrative sagas. The scops sang and danced to enliven these stories while the tribespeople listened with bated breath. As explained by Aristotle in his Poetics, the idea of plot evolved from the same narrative tropes used in early mythologies, going back to the etymology of the very word myth from the Greek word mythos. Northrop Frye considers myth as a structural principle that shapes the literary form:
archetypal patterns are most clearly discernible in myth, for in mythical stories we are in a world of pure and abstract literary design. Myth is the first of three organizations of archetypal symbols; it lies at the pole of total metaphorical identity, and it assumes the form either of a desirable apocalyptic world or an undesirable demonic one. They are sacred stories that define our nation and nationality while also taking us into a world of fantasy and the supernatural. From Dante to Shakespeare to Morrison, literary works of all genres, from all times, have embraced mythology as an integral part. Moreover, poets like John Milton and William Blake went on to create a new mythology through their artistic or poetic creations, while rooting onto their religious and philosophical beliefs.
Cosmogony, Cosmology, and afterlife beliefs
Cosmogony is the evolutionary science of the universe, its origins and features, while cosmology also is the study of the universe's origin, including the many theories and beliefs. In other words, cosmology can be relative, based on the religious belief system it is born out of. The Biblical story of Genesis talks of the universe's birth out of ex nihilo, making it an act of God. The creation of Heaven and Earth comes from the Hebrew Creation myth, where Earth was a formless void until God gave it a shape. Hell was only a later addition, a dark space meant for the punishment of sinners. Two of the most significant instances of cosmology can be found in Dante and Milton.
