Velocity of sprints plays one of the major factor to deliver the product faster in any sprint. To keep the velocity high, we have various factors defined which are mentioned below:
Proper sequencing of User stories – Keep the user stories which are not dependent on other user stories, to be implemented in future. It reduce the rework and need not to change the code repeatedly.
Consider the outcome of Retrospective meeting – As we always have a retrospective meeting at the end of the sprint which contains the positive points, and improvement area to make the upcoming sprint better, take all the points as input and improve the process and plan accordingly.
Requirements should be crystal clear to the scrum team – At the time of sprint planning, each and every story should has the clear and transparent requirement so that complexity can be decided in an efficient manner. All business conversations, documents should be attached with the user stories.
Better prioritization and well defined product backlog – Keep all the items in the product backlog prioritized and sequenced so that scrum master and scrum team should be able to understand how to pick the requirements from the product backlog and in what order, functionalities to be implemented.
Understanding of Business – It is the most important thing is to understand and implement the functionality easily. Understand the business logic and flow why we are implementing this functionality. Not only the cu
ent user stories, but understanding business will help you out during the upcoming sprints while implementing the new functionalities.
Impact Analysis – If change is being made in the existing functionality, it is necessary to do the proper impact analysis of the change. Impact analysis will help you out to identify all the functional areas which are going to be impacted because of that change.
Cross trainings within the Scrum Team – Cross functional training within the Scrum Team plays an important role for removing most of the hurdles during the sprint(s). It sort out the issue of bandwidth, issue of unplanned leaves of the resources, and understanding of functionalities. Team members can give better suggestions and input to each other to finish the tasks on time. We can use the bandwidth of other team members to complete the tasks.
Do not compare – Calculating the velocity is the initial part of the process. Whatever velocity is decided, remain stick on it. Don’t compare the velocity to the other teams.
Maintain the average – If velocity of a sprint is getting down and didn’t match for any reason, try to cover that in upcoming sprint so that average should be maintained.
Keep the Track of Work Done – Keep updating the tasks, created against the user stories, burn the hours so that Burn Down Chart will remain updated and can be tracked for the availability of scrum team.
Remove the Communication Gap – All the discussions like Sprint Planning, sprint Review and Retrospective, Backlog refinement and daily scrum all should be transparent. Meetings should be interactive and communication should be open to all.
Avoid Multitasking – Scrum team should not be bounded to work with parallel tasks. Each team member should work on one task at a time. One it is done, pick the second task.
