Analysis of The Walls by Pink Floyd
Biography of Pink Floyd
Pink Floyd was formed in 1965 in Cam
idge & London, England. The band was active from
1965 through 1983 & 1987 to 1995; 2005. The main group members are Syd Ba
ett, David
Gilmour, Roger Waters, Nick Mason, and Rick Wright. Most of the bands do not last long if
their main singer, leader and song writer leaves but this was not case with Pink Floyd. It does
not only occu
ed once, but it has occu
ed twice and yet they are successful. The roots of
Pink Floyd developed at Cam
idge High School in Britain in the early 1960s. Syd Ba
ett,
David Gilmour and Roger Waters were all friends there and the idea of forming a band crept
in their minds. But after graduating Gilmore decided to join art school in London while
Ba
ett wandered the countryside. In the meanwhile Waters joined an architecture school in
London where he met Wrick Wright and Nick Mason. They established an R&B band with
the name Sigma 6. Waters was on guitar, Wright on keyboard and Mason on drums as well as
vocalist Juliette Gale and bassist Clive Metcalfe. That association didn't last long as Gale and
Metcalfe left and Waters became bass specialist while Bob Close joined to play lead guitar.
The group's name was modified several times and then Close decided to quit. By the end of
1965, Wright, Waters and Mason signed up with up with Ba
ett who became the group's
songwriter as well as lead singer and lead guitar player. He relabelled the group Pink Floyd -
in respect of blues' musicians Floyd Council and Pinkney 'Pink' Anderson.
Under Ba
ett's guidance Floyd would begin quite in a different way than concept
album kings. Their first two music albums made them a psychedelic group. They documented
their first two songs in the beginning of 1966, one, Ba
ett's "Lucy Leave" a combination
R&B and pop music that got some interest of the band. They began to perform in London
underground with light shows as well as instrumental feedback which was a new concept
altogether. In the beginning of 1967 they finalized with EMI Records and launched their first
individual "Arnold Layne" which became hit attaining the UK's Top 20. Their next individual
"See Emily Play" was even bigger hit and a
ived at number 6 in July of '67. Later in '67 their
first appearance record The Piper At The Gateways Of Dawn was launched which became a
Top Ten hit. Many people stated it to be the biggest English psychedelic record other than the
Beatles Sgt. Pepper's. It included mostly Ba
ett composed music that were too much of
experimental pop dreams with long riff-laden instrumental passages (Keno's Classic Rock n
Roll Web Site. 3-5).
