A post-apocalyptic world through two different eyes
The post-apocalyptic world of the poem “There will come soft rains” by Sara Teasdale, and the post-apocalyptic world of the short story “There will come soft rains” by Roy Bradbury, describe two destroyed worlds at two different times. Even though both relate the destruction of the world and both relate the evils of war, the approach taken by the two are only similar in some aspects but largely disparate in most. The world of the poem is set in the past while the world of the short story is set in the future. The common feature of both is that man is gone and the world of humans have ended. However, contrary to the poem that visualizes everything to have forgotten man, in the world of the short story everything seems to remember him (Teasdale; Bradbury).
The post-apocalyptic world of the poem is set at a time when nature reigns supreme. The poetess imagines a serene world that will survive the war with everything beautiful and calm. This, she imagines, will happen after the war has destroyed mankind as a whole. Such a world would not remember or know of humans and their wars and the nature thereafter will continue to be as it is without the ho
ors that man has shown it (Monroe, 262-268). In the story on the other hand, the author describes the daily activities of a family in detail set in a futuristic world. Everything in the house, from cooking to cleaning, is done automatically. So, even with the humans gone the house continues on its schedule. The clock continues to state the time and the various scheduled activities and the house runs about its regular e
ands until the house catches fire and everything is destroyed. The only remaining clock continues to state the time as the sun rises on a destroyed land with no humans remaining (Fiction that get Al Right, 64-65).
There are several points of contrast between the poem and the story, both sharing the same name. The poem describes the nature in its various delicacies stating, “And frogs in the pools singing at night, and wild plum trees in tremulous white” (Teasdale, 2-3). These words describe trivial happenings of nature that people don’t pay attention to, yet take place all the time during rainy seasons in particular. The story on the other hand, continuously describes the mundane life of a human with cooking, cleaning, school-going and other activities that humans are involved with in their daily lives and to which humans pay all their attention and time.
