Look at scenes of Rick and Akiko at the mission and during their time together as husband and wife in America. What is revealed about his character (flaws, mindset, belief system, etc.)? How does he treat Akiko and how does she respond to him? How do you understand his function in novel? What themes or critiques of society (religion/racism/patriachy/nationalism/etc.?) does Keller make through him?
Induk is an important but complicated character in the novel to understand. What is her significance to Akiko at the camps, when she escapes the camps, and in her life afterward?
This might include: analysis (close attention to language of text) of her death scene on page XXXXXXXXXXWhat does Akiko mean when she says Induk “was going sane” (21)? How is Induk resurrected in Akiko’s life? What role does she play? Who does Beccahthink Induk is and why?
