Strategies for Drafting:In class we used the SAYS - DOES prewriting strategy to examine advertisements to determine the message of the advertisement and the techniques the author used to communicate that message. Before you write, select one drafting strategy from the list below to try out.
Problem-Solution Persuasion- Clarify the problem that focuses your piece. Describe and give evidence for the problem. Name the solution you suggest. Give reasons with backup to convince your audience why your solution will work. Write an introduction and conclusion to frame the piece. Then use this thinking and idea development to transform your piece into an advertisement.
- Introduction
- Problem
- Describe the problem
- Provide evidence of the problem
- Solution
- Name the solution
- Give reasons for why it's a good solution
- Back up your reasons with evidence
- Conclusion
Outline - Re-Outline- Take your topic and create an outline for how the piece of writing might go. Then, reimagine the piece by organizing it by a different principle, or by zooming into the topic or broadening out. Look over your outlines and choose the one that feels closest to what you want to write.
Focus on an Image- Before or after drafting, pause and ask yourself, "What is the picture I see in my mind when I think of my topic? What picture seems to symbolize my topic?" Often the visual image you are left with is what is most central to your piece. Go back and make sure that your details support your image.
Write:Write a reaction paper to the chapter in the form of an advertisement. Your advertisement should include ways to improve children’s writing.
Reflect:Complete a double-entry journal for your reflection strategy. To do so, create a table with two columns and five rows. In the first column list at least four different strategies you used while composing your reaction paper. In the second column explain why you used the strategy, how it helped you complete your product, and how you would teach this strategy to your future students. Be sure to develop your responses so they reach the Reasoning and Reconstructing levels of reflection. If necessary review thereflection levels
