Re-read the introductory information for both Booker T. Washington and William E. B. Du Bois. Now, review Washington's "Chapter XIV. The Atlanta Exposition Address," paying particular attention to the 2 paragraphs on p. 573 beginning with "Cast it down... ." and ending with "...essential to mutual progress." Take notes on his tone and diction. Do the same with Du Bois' piece "III. Of Mr. Booker T. Washington and Others" on pg. 694. Consider the differences in backgrounds between these two men.

  1. With whom do you agree most given the time/era then? Why?

  2. Is Du Bois' fair in his assessment of Washington? How or how not?

  3. Is Washington fair in his approach to addressing the problems black people faced, especially in the South? How or how not?

Be sure to contextualize your response within the realities of the time period being studied.
