Project #: Experiment Design

Purpose:

The purpose of this project is to design an experimental procedure to evaluate the relative

performance of an AM radio. A report must be submitted documenting the experimental

procedure that has been designed. The report must be submitted as described below.

Requirements:

• to
develop a method
for measuring the
selectivity
of an AM radio. It is

suggested that the -6db point would be an appropriate measurement. Note that this

value is only a suggestion, and a different gain point (or points) can be selected if

deemed appropriate or necessary.

develop a method
for measuring the
sensitivity
of an AM radio.

• May specify the use of the function generators and other lab equipment

• Measurements are to be specified to be made at more than one carrier frequency in the

normal operating band of the radio.

• a report explaining the
detailed procedure
to be performed in the experiment.

Also, include a theoretical description of the underlying
communications theory
for the

various steps in the experimental procedure.

• report as a Microsoft Word file or a PDF file.

• Reports are to be in the E&CE, standard “Formal
Report” format.

Experimental Procedure for Evaluating the Performance of an AM Radio
Introduction:
The performance of an AM radio can be evaluated based on two important parameters: selectivity and sensitivity. Selectivity refers to the ability of the radio to separate adjacent frequency channels, while sensitivity refers to the ability of the radio to detect weak signals. This experiment aims to design a procedure for measuring the selectivity and sensitivity of an AM radio.
Materials Required:
· AM radio
· Function generato
· Oscilloscope
· RF signal generato
· RF voltmete
· RF attenuato
· Audio signal generato
· Audio voltmete
· Breadboard
· Connecting wires
· Resistor and capacito
Procedure:
Measuring Selectivity:
The selectivity of the AM radio can be measured by determining the -6dB bandwidth of the receiver. The -6dB bandwidth is the bandwidth of the receiver where the output voltage drops by 6dB. Follow these steps to measure the selectivity of the radio:
a. Connect the RF signal generator output to the input of the AM radio through a
eadboard.
. Set the ca
ier frequency of the RF signal generator to the center frequency of the operating band of the AM radio.
c. Set the output voltage of the RF signal generator to a level that the AM radio can receive.
d. Connect the output of the AM radio to the input of the oscilloscope.
e. Tune the AM radio to the center frequency of the RF signal generator and adjust the RF attenuator to obtain a clear signal on the oscilloscope.
f. Measure the voltage of the output signal using the oscilloscope.
g. Change the frequency of the RF signal generator in small increments, while maintaining the output voltage level of the generator, until the output voltage of the AM radio drops to half of the original value.
h. Note the upper and lower frequencies at which the output voltage drops to half of the original value.
i. Calculate the -6dB bandwidth of the receiver as the difference between the upper and lower frequencies obtained in step h.
Measuring Sensitivity:
The sensitivity of the AM radio can be...
