BIOCHEMICAL OXYGEN DEMAND
INTRODUCTION: Biochemical Oxygen Demand i.e. BOD is a measure of oxygen requirement of bacteria during stabilizing decomposable organic matter or food under aerobic conditions. Determination of BOD is an empirical test and the rate of the aerobic degradation of organic matter in this bioassay test is determined in terms of the amount of oxygen consumed during its degradation.
OBJECTIVE: As a water and wastewater design engineer, it was needed to design a treatment for the wastewater generated by the West Mobile area. So, objective of this laboratory experiment was to measure the organic strength and the oxygen requirement of the wastewater i.e. to determine the 5-day BOD, ultimate BOD, and the BOD rate constant of the sample by the dilution method.
METHODOLOGY: Sample used for this laboratory test is Sucrose. Thomas’ Graphical Method was used in this experiment to determine k and Lo. This methodology consisted of two part – 1) Estimation of DF; 2) Main procedure of experiment.
1) Estimation of DF: This included determination of ultimate BOD (Lo) by computing the ThOD of the sample and some tabulation and computation works in excel.
Excel work also included following steps – calculation of BODt with given BOD rate constant (k) and ultimate BOD (Lo) ; DF calculation for each day by dividing BODt column by assumed DO consumed column ; evaluation of Volume of undiluted sample from estimated D.F. column for each day using equation (2) in calculation section and taking total volume = 300 mL ; estimation of DO remaining and DO dropping; estimation of DF chosen by trial and e
or method column until the values in volume of undiluted sample from DF chosen column were integer , the values in estimated DO remaining column were larger than 2 and values in DO drop column were larger than 2.
2) Main procedure of experiment:...
