Create an outline for Speech 4, the Persuasive Speech. Your outline should clearly map out each step of
your speech. You should follow the seven steps of speech organization. You should write in full sentences.
For this speech you should have no trouble Previewing the Body and Summarizing the Main Points because
your thesis should be developed very unambiguously, and you should have 3-5 main points.
Even though I won’t require you to state it explicitly, think about the method of organization you will use. How
can/should you express that in your outline while sticking to the seven steps we have been using to guide our
speeches all semester?
You are required to use four outside sources for this speech. You should find these in the li
ary
databases. On your Works Cited or References page I want to see references to databases, the DOI number
or URL, et cetera. In your outline you should indicate the places where you plan to use the outside sources.
Be specific about the source. Don’t say “I might use a source here.” By this stage, you should know what
sources you are using and how you plan to use them.
I know research in the databases can be challenging. We have probably gotten a little too comfortable
plunking words into popular search engines and taking whatever suits our purpose. (That’s not research, by
the way.) Just know that it’s okay if you aren’t good at using these databases the first few times you use
them. I don’t reckon college is supposed to be easy. Also, why would there be advanced degrees in
Information and Li
ary Sciences if these databases were easy to use?
Please use a formal outline format. If you don’t know what this means, please ask for help or look at the
example outlines in our textbook (review, for example, outline on XXXXXXXXXXI will stress that your outline should
very clearly differentiate between the Introduction, Body, and Conclusion and very clearly differentiate
etween main points (use topics sentences for this). Also, you should clearly label your transitions.
Criteria for Evaluation
-You use an outline form
-Every one of the seven steps for organizing your speech is accounted for (see page 19)
-You provide specific details for how each of the seven steps will be covered in your speech
-Each body paragraph has a main point, which you establish with a topic sentence
-You explain in sufficient detail how you will develop and support each body paragraph
