CASE STUDY 1
ALLIANCE BOOTS
INSTRUCTIONS
Resource: textbook pg 74 and answer the three questions that apply
The purpose of this assignment is two-fold.
First, is for you to submit a paper in proper APA format using the tools I have posted in the
Announcement titled "Proper APA Formatting" as this is the paper where I will provide you with
significant instructor feedback on this deliverable to help you with subsequent submissions. A properly
APA formatted paper enhances the readability and credibility of the work you submit. Take advantage of
the feedback you receive, ask questions where you may not understand, and incorporate
ecommendations so your next submission has strong APA formatting and point earning potential. Read
the course syllabus and the ru
ic for the assignment for the rest of the deliverables for your written
work.
Secondly, this is a great jumping off point for you to start performing high quality academic research.
You must have a specific number of quality sources in each written assignment so ensure they are
academic in nature (no blogs, wikis, Prezi's made by other students, etc). I recommend you contact the
GBC Li
ary so they can show you how to search the databases relevant to the topic. If you have any
questions, please email to me ASAP. I do not answer emails on the night assignments (exams) are
due.
Written Case Study:
The student will write a thorough essay (1000 to 1250 words excluding cover page, abstract, and
eferences) that answer all questions applying to the case and provided by the author or instructor. Do
not submit as either a numbered Q & A or as a bulleted list of data submission but rather as a
completed written paper. Because this is an upper division course, students are responsible for their
own time management and as such, should ensure they complete the papers earlier, rather than
waiting until the night the assignment is due. Avoid the overwhelmed feeling a student can encounter
when they wait until the last minute to start a written paper with significant point allocation.
The student should relate the case to the chapter materials and issues. All students should do any
Internet and/or li
ary database research required prior to writing his or her response (multiple sources

adds credibility). Note that the instructor does not recognize Wikipedia as a suitable reference source
for academic submissions due to the editable nature of the material found there that raises concerns
about veracity and validity of content. Do not cite Wikipedia (other “pedias”) or other non-academic
sources such as dictionaries, blogs, Prezis CourseHero, MBATutor, and most “.com” in your references
for the Case Study assignments.
Ensure that proper grammar, sentence structure, and material citations are included for maximum point
consideration. Neglecting to cite other authors original material is plagiarism and will be graded
accordingly (see the Academic Integrity section in the syllabus on page 10). Include properly formatted
cover, abstract, and reference pages with your Case Studies. A minimum of four reference sources in
addition to your textbook are required. Once posted to the assignment drop box, instructor
grading may occur even if before the due date so ensure you have posted your final version.
Resubmissions after grading are not accepted.
Submit as an attachment in proper APA format as a Microsoft® Word document only with proper
grammar, spelling, citations, cover and reference pages. Access GBC’s Academic Success Center
web page for resources to aid in proper formatting http:

(http:

high quality submission is expected with depth, detail, and analysis for maximum point consideration

Case Study
Abstract
This is a case study about Richard Baker who joined Alliance Boots as the CEO in 2003. He joined when the company was almost failing in the market. But with his innovative thinking and creative ideas, he managed to boost the sales by 5% in one year. He decreased the losses and increased customer satisfaction with his skills. Baker focused all his decisions on customer satisfaction and tried to improve the services provided by the company. His work is an inspiring example for the managers in making.
Richard Baker and his viewpoints
Richard Baker took over as the CEO of Alliance Boots in 2003. Boots was known for being a local pharmacy with health items, cosmetics and toiletries. At the time when he overtook the company it had almost failed as a
and and business. Baker had certain viewpoints about the company that were actually true. He analyzed that the company had become bureaucratic and it needed some fresh changes to keep it up in the market. Baker also came to a conclusion that the information technology of the company was very old and needed upgrade. He also found out that the headquarters was cluttered and had many people. He also knew that Boots was facing tough competition with new and upcoming companies. He realized that if he did not change the way Boots work then the company might get obsolete. There was tough competition from Walmart and other such companies. Baker realized that if Boots does not upgrade itself then it would lose its market. Baker was full of new ideas that could save the company but he to work cautiously so that the company does not face any setbacks at the time of necessary modifications.
Baker had very different viewpoints than the people working in boots. Baker had worked in Asda previously which always encouraged new ideas. Boots was just the opposite as it had been working according to the age old principle and did not welcome any changes. Baker made certain rational and important changes to allow Boots flourish. Boots had grown immune to the changes that happened in the retail market so Baker made sure that these changes were implemented. Soon after his joining, Baker removed 900 employees from the headquarters. Baker realized that the managers in the headquarters were not doing enough. Three four people were doing the work that one efficient man could complete in the same time. Thus, removing all the inefficient and lazy people, Baker saved the company more than $71 million. Also, he allowed the store managers to take decisions about their stores and this helped in increasing the sales due to more customer satisfaction. Baker also appointed 300...
