Unit 2 Assignment 2: Operational Scenario

Part A: The Warden
You are a new warden at a large prison somewhere in the United States. The prison
that you have been assigned to has been plagued with numerous physical
altercations and has had three small riots, two on separate cellblocks, and another in
the chow hall. Furthermore, gang-related violence has occu
ed in this prison and, as
is usually the case in prisons, these gang loyalties fall along racial lines.
Further still, your prison staff has had numerous problems based on racial identity.
During turnout prior to shift-change, you can see that the staff a
anges themselves
according to racial groups. Also, when the prison tried to a
ange diversity training
last month, an all-time high was reached in employee absenteeism and there were
more employee arguments and disagreements. The training seemed to polarize the
staff even further.
It has become a source of concern for you because you now have reason to believe
that some staff may essentially be turning a “blind eye” to inmate activities if the staff
member and the inmate are of the same race/ethnicity. This naturally compromises
the security of the institution and places everyone's safety in jeopardy.
Upon attempting to improve employee racial relations in your prison institution, you
note that there appears to be two rough “group views” within your prison staff. There
is one group who is “hard-lined” and conservative. This group takes a punitive
approach toward the inmate population. The other group is more “soft” and liberal in
approach and takes a less restrictive approach to human relations with the inmate
population. These groups seem to be at great odds with one another, and the irony
is that there
are members of each racial/ethnic background and of both genders who subscribe to
BOTH views.

Reflect on the above scenario and answer the following questions using a
350-word minimum for each answer.

1. Discuss attitudes among employees in an organization. Specifically, explain how
poor attitudes among co
ectional staff in a state prison might affect other aspects
of that prison.

2. Discuss the importance of employee satisfaction within this prison. What are
some likely indicators that can alert prison management of poor employee
satisfaction within that prison?

3. What type of plan would you implement to address the problems within the
prison? When deciding how to address these problems within the prison,
which of the three ethical decision criteria would be the best fit and why?

4. What innovative solutions could be used to address the problems within the
prison?

5. Within a prison, performance and social a
angement norms are likely to be
norms that reinforce consistency among staff. How is this likely to affect overall
job satisfaction? What effect will it have on employees who are not conforming in
personality?

Part B: Ethical Behavior

Modern Criminal Justice managers want to promote ethical behaviors in their
organizations. Considering this statement, answer the following questions using a
350-word minimum for each answer.
1. Discuss the three ways leaders can manage ethical behavior in their
organizations. Provide at least one example from a cu
ent law enforcement
agency that supports your discussion.
2. Are the management theories discussed only a U.S. concept or do other
countries manage their organizations in this way? Explain your answer and
provide examples.

Answer to question no 1
Regarding the case study, it has been found that some issues in prison affect the overall environment of the prison. It has been observed that there are some physical altercations and riots that generate a hazardous situation in the prison. However, the entire staff of the prison also suffered from some issues such as they could not identify them as a racial group and that causes a poor environment in the prison. Co
ectional staffs are not as the potential to resolve these situations (Hairston, 2017). However, it has also observed the tendency of absence is increasing among staff and they cannot mitigate the criteria of collective effort or team effort to resolve the role conflict among employees. It has also observed that the level of arguments is increasing and that affect the overall operational activities of the prison. The poor attitude of co
ectional staff becomes the prior reason for this type of hazard situation in prison. Two poles divide the overall staffs during the training session regarding the case study and that increase the role of conflict among co
ectional staff. The prison required to have approached a positive and organised system to resolve these types of riots. However, co
ectional staffs are not able to pay attention to this point and that creates this type of hazard situation in the prison. The overall group of staff divided into two groups that occupied a different pole.
One of them believed to have an approach for a punitive way for accused and other groups are believed soft way to resolve this type of situational hazards. Lack of coordination is observing to have among co
ectional staff and that affect to maintain the operational activities of the prison (Day, Fowles, McElhone & Ewin, 2019). Similarly, co
ectional staffs are not found to be active to set up the ethical appraisal in the prison. However, it is very necessary to control the riots and physical altercation in prison. Staffs are not potential; to resolve their role conflict and that hurts the entire environment of the prison. It has also observed that due to this the rate of physical altercation is increasing in the prison.
Answer to question no 2
Regarding the case study, employee satisfaction is a required element to maintain the overall situation of this prison. It plays a significant role to manage the overall situation of the prison. Co
ectional staffs are the prior and expensive resource of the prison and they play a significant role to manage the entire activities of the prison. In this, situation employees required to be satisfied that they could manage the entire conflict of the prison. Employee satisfaction is important as it recognised as the main resource of operational activities. If co
ectional staffs are satisfied with their job role, they can enhance implementation to the organisational principle in the prison. To maintain the overall operational activities in the prison employees required cooperating and that a
ives through the job satisfaction among co
ectional staff in the poison. It helps them to set up a development program for prisoners (Alegre, Mas-Machuca & Be
egal-Mirabent, 2016). The importance of employee satisfaction within prison is important as it helps to enhance a suitable environment in the prison to develop the ethical and moral values among prisoners. It helps them to come back to the mainstream of life and they can drive them out to criminal offence.
Regarding the case study, prison management has some indications that help them to understand the employee's dissatisfaction. The prison management found after a thorough observation that rate absent is increasing among co
ectional staff. However, employees are diverse and they are involved in are arguments while playing their job role. The prisoner management also gets indication through the role conflict among their employees that they are not satisfied with their job. Apart from this, lack of coordination and arguments was indicating the prisoner management that co
ectional staff is not satisfied with their job and that affect the overall activities of the prison. Staffs are not coordinate with each other and avoid their responsibilities and that indicate the prison management to the poor situation of employees working in the prison (Jacobs, Yu & Chavez, 2016). Apart from this, the prison management also obtains an indication that employees are divided into two different groups and categorised by two poles that affect the overall activities in the prison. However, this also recognised as the indicators that show dissatisfaction of employees.
Answer to question no 3
It becomes very necessary to reduce the elementary factors among co
ectional staff and that affect the overall activities of the prison. The prisoner management required to have an approach for some positive way to satisfy their employees. To resolve these issues in the prison the prisoner management required to have a positive approach toward prisoners and should understand their problems.
