Sappho was one of the greatest lyricists of Greece and was considered as one of the 
greatest of the few-known female Greek poets. She was born between 630 and 612 B.C. and 
“Her wealth afforded her with the opportunity to live her life as she chose, and she chose to 
spend it studying the arts on the isle of Lesbos” (“Sappho: circa 630 B.C.”, n.d.). It must be 
noted that the style of her compositions were sensual and melodic and the object of affection in 
her compositions was love of a woman for another woman. Unfortunately, it was due to the 
infusion of the concept of lesbianism her poems later on were condemned and in the fourth 
century C.E. and later in the eleventh century C.E her poems were banned and eventually 
burned. But if Sophocles’ cherished protagonist Antigone would have been asked to give her 
opinion regarding the burning of the works of Sappho, then she would have vehemently 
criticized such action. The character of Antigone can be considered as a feminist character born
