COMS356 Introduction to Behavioral Research Methods in Communication
HW #2: Writing Literature Review for Hypothesis 1
THIS SHOULD BE COMPLETED AS A PAIR!
Due Date: Friday, September 27th
· If you do not turn your assignment in on the day and time it is due, 10% will be deducted for every day (including weekends) it is late (see the syllabus for detail).
· Turn in on your group flash drive!
Points Possible: 20
Pages: 2 pages (double space, 12 font, Times New Roman, 1-inch margins) – Going over 2 pages will result in a 3-point deduction per page.
Objectives:
1. Identify relevant parts from an article to the chosen topic
2. Understand the concept/functions of hypothesis
3. Build argument toward the given hypothesis by reflecting what is learned from HW#1
4. Identify other variables relevant to the chosen topic
5. Cite using APA style
Your Mission:
1. As a pair, choose one project out of the four project choices. Take note of the Given Hypothesis (Hypothesis 1) on the project summary. The literature you write will build an argument towards this hypothesis.
2. Obtain the assigned article for the chosen project from Blackboard (See: Project Materials tab). You don’t have to pick the same article you used for HW1, but you can if you’d like.
3. Individually read the assigned article. If you and/or your partner already read the article for HW1, read it again as this assignment has different objectives than HW1.
4. Find sections of the article or hypothesis(ses) that are particularly relevant to the research topic of your project. You should look at the variables in the given hypothesis (your H1) to find which sections in the article are relevant.
5. With your partner, complete the first row in your Article Summary Table.
6. Write a 2-page argument (this should not be a summary of the given article) toward your H1. This part will be part of your literature review in the final project. You are only allowed to use ONE direct quote – all other citations should be paraphrases.
7. Create a reference page using APA style. You only need to cite 1 source, the article you obtained from Blackboard that is associated with your project.
8. Identify three other dependent variables that may also be associated to the given independent variable in the project. (Note: Demographic variables cannot be dependent variables!!) Explain why you believe each additional dependent variable may be associated with the independent variable.
9. Describe in your own words the process you will go through to test your hypotheses on your participants. (Hint: Check your project materials folder!)
· What will you show them?
· Are there particular questions you will ask them?
Use the following formatting guide to organize your literature review:
Function
Content
Paragraph 1
Introduce the IV
· Conceptually define the variable
· Summarize prior literature – what do we know about this variable? What has research found about this variable?
Paragraph 2
Introduce DV1
· Conceptually define the variable
· Summarize prior literature – what do we know about this variable? What has research found about this variable?
Paragraph 3
Explain the relationship between the IV and DV1
· State Hypothesis 1.
· Why do you expect to see the hypothesized relationship?
· What evidence (from previous research) supports this hypothesis?
Paragraph 4
Other possible DVs
· State three possible DVs associated with your given IV
· Explain how each possible DV could be related to your given IV
Paragraph 5
Description of testing
· What will participants see or read? (experiments)
· What types of questions will you ask them? For your IV and DV (relevant for all projects)
Turn in the Following:
Note: Create a folder on your flash drive called “HW2” and place all relevant material there.
1. Article Summary Table
2. As a pair, complete 2-page (double spaced) literature review toward H1. Use an essay format. Make sure to use APA style for in-text citations (only 1 direct quote).
3. Provide a reference page using APA.
4. As a pair, make a list of 3 possible additional DVs and provide explanations.
5. As a pair, describe how you will test your hypotheses.
Submit HW#2 on your flash drive!!
