The levels of Oil consumption in the United States have fluctuated over the last fifty years. Consuming 18.8 million

els per day (MMbd) of petroleum products as in 2011, we are at present the largest consumer of petroleum
products. Although we consume 24 percent of the world’s oil supply, our proven reserves are a meagre 2.1 percent.
We imported around 11.4 MMbd of petroleum products in 2011. We should consider ourselves fortunate that close
to 50% of our oil supplies come from friendly countries such as Canada, Mexico and Saudi Arabia. But the other
half is imported from the members of the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries or OPEC. But at times
they have reduced supplies thereby driving up prices, which in turn caused economic upheaval in the United States.
This places our national security at risk since many of these nations are unstable, ha
