Gender Identity and Transgender People
Gender Identity and Transgender People
Introduction
Gender is a socially constructed attribute of men, women, boys, and girls. This includes behaviours, roles, and norms related to being a man, woman, boy, or girl, as well as interpersonal relationships. Gender, as a social construct, differs from community to community and can vary over time (Peitzmeier et al.).
Transgender refers to individuals for whom the internal sense of being female, male, or something else, or gender identity, differs from the sex assigned to them at birth.Â
They are often gender nonconforming, which means they adopt habits and customs not typically related to their identified birth sex. Transgender people can share their gender identity through their speech, actions, clothing, hairstyle, and other behaviours (Campbell et al.).
